Happy (Intense) Birthday, Neil Conrad!
NEW ORLEANS, La. — There’s one image from last summer’s VBI Third Week Extension that will stay with me to my last day. The image? Neil Conrad intensely yelling in Matt Dunay’s ear during a top lab speed drill: “One more week to get better! One more week to get faster! One more week to get more intense!” Neil, a former champion basketball player, can clearly channel the most intense of athletic coaches. (And given that he’s one of the most intense debate coaches around, well, that’s a lot of energy to channel.)
In fact, if you know him, I’ll bet you can picture this scene perfectly without having been there yourself. And hopefully it made you laugh, as it continues to make me laugh. In any case, please join me in wishing Neil a most intense birthday.

Happy Birthday! Another story about Neil’s intensity is his introduction to his 2AR lecture during week 3 last summer, which featured a video of Reggie Bush taking a hard tackle and Neil pounding on the table yelling “BAM!” over and over. Awesome. Have a good day, bud!
