Chris Catterton Wins Voices Round Robin
Presentation High School Hosts Fundraising Event
SAN JOSE, Cali. — The Voices Foundation held its annual Lincoln-Douglas debate round robin at Presentation High School this weekend. All fees and donations collected during the weekend will go directly to supporting Voices initiatives that focus on John McKay’s original mission to address deficiencies of financial and educational resources that deter many students from fully participating in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
The final round of the weekend featured Analy High School’s Chris Catterton and Mountain View High School’s Daniel Khalessi. A panel of Tim Case, Adam Nelson, Alex Smith, Wesley Craven, and the combined student vote adjudicated; it was a 5-0 decision for Chris. Congratulations to both debaters!
Chris is coached by Lynette Williamson, Mike Spirtos, and Corbin Cass; Daniel is coached by Eric Palmer and Stephen Hess.

There were only 8 competitors on the student panel (as opposed to 11) because 2 of us were debating and 1 had to leave.

What would have happened with a 4-4 split?

Garber’s ballot would not have counted.

Congratulations to Chris and Daniel!
Sheila, Tim, and the rest of the Voices volunteers should be commended for their work in putting this event together and raising money for the good works done by the organization.
I have to admit, I’m a little confused as to why Daniel Garber was voting in the first place if his teammate was in the final round. (Not that I don’t doubt his ability to remain objective, but why be put in that situation?)

Looks like an awesome event. Congrats to everyone.
I think what Adam is saying is that Garber wasn’t really ever “voting”, if his ballot didn’t count in a 4-4 tie at every point each debater needed to win 4 of the 7 others to get the student vote. So calling it an 8-0 is probably not completely accurate, since only 7 of the ballots ever counted.

Deceptive? Not intentionally. I kind of just forgot it was there; thank you to Michael Mangus for pointing that out.

Apparently, I am Navajo. I don’t know how, but I guess it’s easier to pronounce.
Anyway, congrats to Om for top seed, DFK for getting to finals, and Catterton for having an excellent streak from harker till now.
Also, much props to Tim Case and Sheila McKay for running a very excellent and very democratic round robin. One of the best I’ve been to.

Congratulations to all the competitors this past weekend. It certainly was an interesting and enjoyable experience for me and hopefully the competitors will agree.
I aso wanted to note that Mountain View’s Natalee Pei was 3rd speaker overall.
Congrats to Chris, DFK, Om, and Ben on your performances and congrats to the rest of the field. Many thanks to the coaches and judges for helping make things run smooth.
(On a side note, it didnt seem fair to tell Garber he didnt matter, so I let him cast a ballot [which wound up very objective] despite the fact that as Sam points out, if it came down to it, it wouldnt have counted [sorry Garber])
