NEWBURGH, N.Y. — The Northeast Championships began as an experiment held concurrently with last year’s Westchester Classic; this year, with its move to Newburgh Free Academy, the event intended as a culminating experience for Northeast debaters became a full-fledged, full-service tournament featuring three divisions of Lincoln-Douglas debate, two divisions of policy debate, and a single division of Public Forum debate.

The varsity final round pitted Stuyvesant High School’s Jared Dummitt against Scarsdale High School’s Eric Thurm. Eric Perelman, Ben Bassoff, and Anthony Berryhill adjudicated, and on a 2-1 decision — Berryhill dissented — Jared defeated Eric to become the Northeast Champion.

Jared is coached by Julie Sheinman and Caitlin Halpern; Eric is coached by Joe Vaughan and Chetan Hertzig.

Ben Yu and Michael Hassin
Ben Yu and Michael Hassin

The tournament cleared all debaters with winning records in both Lincoln-Douglas and policy debate. The top four placing teams in Public Forum debate received awards.

In junior varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate, it was a New Jersey face-off as Millburn High School’s Michael Hassin debated Whippany Park High School’s Ben Yu. The round ended in a 3-0 decision for Millburn; it was adjudicated by Chetan Hertzig, Jimi Morales, and Bryce Adams. Congratulations to both debaters!

Michael is coached by Brian Raymond; Ben is coached by Rebecca Hansen.

Bronx Science and Stuyvesant established awards in honor of the late Michael Bacon, who coached at Newburgh Free Academy, and these awards were presented for the first time this weekend. Bronx Science donated the championship trophies for the novice Lincoln-Douglas and policy champions; Stuyvesant donated the top speaker award in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate. These established awards will include both permanent, perpetual trophies; individual awards for each recipient will be presented annually. Given Bacon’s deep dedication to the education of the youngest members of the debate community, it was felt that naming novice awards in his honor was especially appropriate.

So, then, congratulations are in order for the co-champions in the novice Lincoln-Douglas debate tournament. Out of respect for the Newburgh team members who were scheduled to judge — while still having clean-up duties ahead of them! — a decision was made to declare the finalists, who were also the first and second seeds, co-champions. And with that, Berkeley Carroll School’s Dylan Scher and the Bronx High School of Science’s Matt Ross were named this year’s Novice Northeast Champions.

Dylan is coached by Jim Shapiro; Matt is coached by Jon Cruz.

In the varsity policy debate tournament, Newburgh Free Academy’s Neil Bapodra and Neil Patel defeated Bronx Science’s Andrew Markoff and Zack Elias on a 2-1 decision. (Les Phillips and Asha Cherian made up the majority; Bret Harper dissented.) Congratulations to both teams on this accomplishment!

The Neils are coached by Sheryl Kaczmarek; Andrew and Zack are coached by Sarah M. Heaton, David Marks, and Jon Cruz.

In novice policy debate, Bronx Science’s Susanna Im and Helen Lee defeated Teresa Yan and Kai Sam Ng on a 3-0 decision in the final round. Congratulations to both teams on making it to finals!

Susanna and Helen are coached by Jon Cruz and Sarah M. Heaton; Teresa and Kai Sam are coached by Julie Sheinman and Bret Harper.

In the final division of competition, the maverick Public Forum debater Stefan Kazmi — who debated without his regular partner, Laura Maschler, this weekend — placed first after debating undefeated through nine rounds of competition. His teammates, Lev Raslin and Rohan Jotwani, placed second. Stefan, Lev, and Rohan debate for Bronx Science. They are coached by Joseph Gazzola and Jon Cruz.

The Bronx High School of Science took top honors as the championship school. Sweepstakes awards, established for this edition of the tournament, were based on the preliminary round results of the top seven entries from each program across events. Whippany Park High School won the tournament’s Small School Award.

    Good job Mikey.

You clearly won the round, I just regret not running a po-mo AC–but I couldn’t, with that panel, I just had little choice. Especially since they said it would be bad for (us) to go fast since it was so late (2 were tired and 1 was hungry).

Also, Max, I was side locked as AFF–we hit already in round 5, and I picked up. I’m sorry to say my chances of picking up affirming in outrounds with that sort of a panel is really hard.

    —-

Thanks a lot Glen, also great job to Alex Williams for doing so well. Even though you were pulled up twice, you were absolutely dominating.

    I ended 6-2, and Mikey 7-1.

Congratulations to Daniel Chen, for just doing so well, even if there were some bad decisions made.

Also, Glen, I still have the round-robin next week. My season is NOT over yet :D

what hassin said; even though i’ll probably get my ballots back soon enough i’m impatient.

and congratulations to everyone, matt ross and dylan for sudo-closing out, abhi for breaking (walkovers suck, dude), and emanuel for making it to quarters. also vineet, melanie, and adam. good job all.
