Emily Osborne Wins Massachusetts State Title
KINGSTON, Mass. — This weekend’s Massachusetts Forensic League State Debate Tournament was something special: not only were students in the presence of champion debaters from across the Bay State, they were in the presence of a squadron of reigning beauty pageant queens — led by former champion Lincoln-Douglas debater Amanda Liverzani — who were called to service to adjudicate Public Forum rounds. Liverzani also found time to submit the results of the tournament to VBD.
Congratulations are in order for Manchester Essex Regional High School’s Emily Osborne and Sacred Heart High School’s Shadman Zaman, the finalists at this year’s tournament! On a 2-1 decision, Emily defeated Shadman to win the state title.
Emily is coached by Jonathan Peele; Shadman is coached by Beena Koshy and Chetan Hertzig.

But Jonathan Peele and I will be the winners in the swimsuit competition for those who can stomach it.

I think the next Ask Cruz should answer the question of how many debaters have gone on to win beauty pageants.

They were, and I promise I’m not just being nice, excellent judges one and all. Their ballots were great and they were great all through the day.

jon/chris/whoever knows:
Was there a particular rationale/story behind the presence of the pageant queen squadron? it sounds like it could be really interesting….

From what I can gather (ie, typing “Amanda Liverzani” and “pageant” into Google), apparently Amanda Liverzani won some kind of beauty pageant.

Amanda is Miss Pioneer Valley, and I believe one of the messages of her reign has been “Breaking Down Barriers through Communication.” She’s raised a lot of money for charities, including the Children’s Miracle Network, and is active on the Miss America circuit. She also made an appearance in her role as Miss Pioneer Valley at last year’s VBI!
Tim Averill’s post — comment #1 — will rank high in the annals of the Great VBD Posts of All Time. I’m still laughing.
Congratulations to Emily and Shadman! I had a chance to work with Emily, albeit indirectly, this winter at Pinnacle and I think she’s just great. And so, obviously, is Shadman. Nice work!

I’m guessing the judging panel for the swimsuit contest will be the same as it was for PF finals…
