Building an Institutional Memory: Woodward

posted by Jon Cruz on April 10th, 2008

front_woodward_ndca.jpgNEW YORK, N.Y. — Matt Ross proposed a simple question for my next Ask Cruz: “Which Woodward champions, in their novice year, have gone on to win the TOC?”

Ask Cruz returns next week, and while preparing it, I realized that Woodward is one of those stories tournaments that seems to lack a clear record of its story: in other words, there aren’t clear, thorough records of the tournament’s results; indeed, I don’t have a full list of past champions, runners-up, top speakers.

So I’m reaching out to the debate community. Let’s list as many past champions, runners-up, and top speakers in both the novice and second-year divisions — in both LD and policy! — as we can. Help me out. I’ll be doing this with other tournaments, too, by the way.

I’m pretty sure that during my freshman year (2004 Woodward), the champion in Novice LD was Molly Clark of Valley HS. She beat Miles Brundage in finals, who beat Elyse Lyons in semis. To be honest, I don’t know who the second year champ was, though something tells me it was probably Tim Walsh of Trinity Prep. In policy, the second year champions were Mark Presenti and Jack Ewing of Bishop Guertin.

During my sophomore year, Sumi Sinha of Bishop Guertin beat Steven Whose Last Name I can’t Recall of Lake Highland Prep in the novice division; I beat Caroline Yachan of Lake Mary in the second year division; Isabelle Figaro of Bishop Guertin and Eric Perlman of Spanish River were in semis.

    2006 SECOND-YEAR
    Champion - Becca Traber (Kinkaid)
Runner-up - Hana Ahmed (Lake Highland)
Top Speaker - Corey Metzman (MBA)

    2006 NOVICE
Champion - Alyson Promes (Lake Highland)
Runner-up - Saboor Sheerazi (Bronx Science)
Top Speaker - Alyson Promes (Lake Highland)

    2007 SECOND-YEAR
Champion - Rusty Mawn (Vestavia Hills)
Runner-up - Alyson Promes (Lake Highland)
Top Speaker - Matt Dunay (Bronx Science)

    2007 NOVICE
Champion - Stephanie Mazursky (Bronx Science)
    Runner-up - Nick Bratton (Meadows)
Top Speaker - Nick Bratton (Meadows)

Bronx Science’s Dylan Gorman and David Seidman were in semis last year, but I’m forgetting the policy results from finals of both divisions, and the names of the top speakers.

I believe David Wolfish, John Lewis, and Amanda Liverzani are all past finalists, so maybe they can help, too. And others!

    To Jon
Those dates are both off a year, 2006 should be 2007 and 2005 should be 2006

So, here’s a question, and it’s one I’ve been asking since about 2001: Some people, including the editors of this website, refer to the Woodward tournament as “Novice Nationals,” though they do it inconsistently. They also refer to the champion of this tournament as the “Novice National Champion.” Yet there exists another tournament out there which has, in the past, by some, been called the “Novice National Tournament,” the Great Midwestern Novice Debate Championships held in Iowa City, IA. My question is simple: what qualifies the champion of one tournament or the other to call themselves the “National Champion,” as people commonly do? Both tournaments have been won by LDers that have gone on to do great things in the activity. Both tournaments have gotten pools that could only be called “national” in their recent history. Not to diminish the accomplishments of debaters who have been involved with either tournament at any point in history, nor to question the judgment of the debaters and coaches who call these people “national champions” but what gives?

My proposal is to have the champion of both tournaments fight in a cage match. If the same debater wins both tournament, I’d propose that debater fight him/herself.

As a somewhat related question Cruise, I’d love to hear stories of folks who started really late in their careers and still managed to achieve a high amount of success.

    anon:

Last year 3/4 TOC semifinalists started their careers pretty late. Matt Aks began debate as a sophomore, Patrick Diehl switched from policy to ld in either his sophomore or junior year (I know he went JV at Glenbrooks his junior year), and I think that David McGough did something similar.

There are probably other cases that I’m neglecting, these just seem to be the most recent.

Mangus, can you explain that concept a bit more. I thought a zero derivation had to be the same as the word like (turn as a noun and as a verb). So wouldn’t semi-ing not be a zero derivation? (I have no real background in linguistics but I like the field and perhaps will major in it).

    Thanks!

zero derivation, at least in my experience, just refers to converting a lexical item to a new lexical class. in this case, an inflectional affix has been applied to the new verb form (semi + ing) but the existence of that verb in the lexicon indicates that zero derivation has taken place. if -ing was a derivational, rather than inflectional, affix you would have a point (that would be an example of derivation and not word formation). as far as i know, ’semi-ing,’ ’semi-ed,’ etc are all just inflected forms of the same lexeme, semi (v), derived by zero-formation (or “conversion”) from semi (n).

er, that last line should be ‘zero-derivation’ not ‘zero-formation’
