Bronx Science Closes Out Second-Year Nationals; Larry Liu is Novice National Champion
Bronx Science Wins Second-Year Policy Tournament
ATLANTA, Ga. — The Woodward Academy’s Second-Year and Novice National Championships — perhaps the nation’s foremost forum for younger competition — came to a close Sunday afternoon.
The second-year Lincoln-Douglas debate tournament concluded with a close-out in the final round by two debaters from the Bronx High School of Science: Adam Silver and Bobby Esnard, who shared the title after battling through a very competitive field. Things played out differently in the novice division, which featured a phenomenal final round between Oak Mountain High School’s Larry Liu and the Meadows School’s Jordan LaMothe. On a 3-0 decision, Larry defeated Jordan to claim the title. Congratulations to all four debaters!
Adam and Bobby are coached by Jon Cruz, Douglas Jeffers, and Taarini Vohra. Larry is coached by Joan Huey; Jordan is coached by Dan Meyers.

What are some of the issues folks would like to talk about at the Town Hall Forum? Bietz and I don’t see this session as a lecture, but a larger discussion of issues in the LD community. I would like some time to discuss the proliferation of “theory” in contemporary LD. “Prestandard” arguments, counterplans, “you gotta have a plan”, etc… as an example if folks see those issues as important.
If there is an interest in particular topics, post it here and we can lead the discussion in that direction.

Huge congrats to the twins for owning the novice division, to Adam and Bobby on their closeout, and to Sasha for a great performance.
Also major congrats and condolences to Kevin Sipe who had a legitimate shot at winning this thing but our coach doesn’t like debate so much that the extra two hours to finish the tournament were just too much for him to handle.
On a side note: Jordan LaMothe is the most talented novice I have ever seen. Expect this kid to be at TOC next year.
