Becca Traber, Madeline Vuong Win Lone Star Round Robin Titles

posted by Jon Cruz on March 30th, 2008

DALLAS, Tex. — The Hockaday School’s Lone Star Round Robin — billed as the last ever — came to a close today with the naming of two champions: the Kinkaid School’s Becca Traber in the TOC/Senior Division, and Anderson High School’s Madeline Vuong in the Rising Division. Becca defeated Hockaday’s Joan Gass on a 5-0 in the final round; Madeline defeated Clear Lake High School’s Jessica Jeang on a 5-0 in finals as well. Congratulations to all four debaters!

Becca is coached by Eric Emerson and Ryan Cooper; Joan is coached by Stacy Thomas and Tom Evnen. Madeline is coached by Joseph Uehler; Jessica is coached by Martin Klein and Michael O’Connell.

Rounds commenced on Saturday, with the elimination rounds taking place on Sunday. A series of educational lectures — both on debate strategy and on the practical application of debate skills in the outside world — were held throughout the weekend, bringing together debate coaches and community leaders in this unique forum for top female debaters from across the country.

Each pod in each division was named after an influential female intellectual and political figure from different historical periods. The winner of each pod was awarded a copy of one of the writer’s key works for which her pod was named in addition to Lone Star’s traditional cowboy hat and boot.

I’m not sure who all is still reading this, but I wanted to say some thank yous that I forgot to say publically this weekend due to being so out of it (lack of sleep). Huge appreciation goes to Nathan Abell, BobieJo Ferguson, and Wes Craven who served as volunteers this weekend so that we could reduce judging fees for some participants who needed the help. Thanks to Ernie Rose, Kristen Ray, and Kris Wright for putting together wonderful lectures for the debaters. All the feedback I got was that these lectures were highly educational and interesting. Thanks to Steffany Batik of Colleyville-Heritage for running tab, and Daryn Paciotti for running the ballot table. You kept us on track and allowed me to simply enjoy this last year of the event. Thanks to my students (especially Berenice Villela and Jenny McCartney who were in charge of food and transportation) and Tom Evnen for all the hard work they did to make this weekend happen. Thanks to the parents who attended and participated. I love seeing parents at this event and was able to have some wonderful conversations with them. It added a lot to our weekend. Then, there are the Hockaday parents/families who housed everybody, provided transportation, cooked food, etc. This support is the only way this round robin happens, so I’m very grateful.

Several people asked us where we got our timers, so I wanted to give out the information of the company we use. They gave us a great deal and did a terrific job with the art. We use http://www.promopeddler.com. Our sales rep is David Robinson.

Finally, to those at the event in general (from debaters to judges to observers), personally this was the most special weekend of my debate career, and it is because of you. Thanks to everybody who had conversations with me — until all hours of the morning — and to everyone who has been so supportive over the years of this event, whether it be driving down from Austin to help with our judging pool or staying to help me clean up when I’m exhausted on Sunday despite the fact that you aren’t even my student (thanks Rahim and Ryan and others).

Finally, congrats to Becca and Madeline. I heard nothing but amazing things about both of you from everyone who watched you debate. Great job to all the other semifinalists and participants. Judges repeatedly told me that the rounds they saw this weekend were incredible.
