Reid Brown is Great Midwestern Novice Champion

Second Year in a Row "Valley RB" Wins Tournament
DM Roosevelt Closes Out PF to Defend Title
Omaha Westside Takes Policy Tournament
posted by Jon Cruz on March 29th, 2008

IOWA CITY, Iowa — This year’s edition of the Great Midwestern Novice Championships, held annually at Iowa City West High School, came to a close late Saturday afternoon. After debating fierce novice competition throughout the Midwest, the top sixteen competitors advanced into the elimination rounds. In finals, Omaha Westside High School’s Julie Aust faced off against Valley High School’s Reid Brown (unrelated to last year’s Great Midwestern Novice Champion, Ross Brown, also of Valley).

Valley kept the title as Reid emerged victorious in finals. Congratulations to both finalists!

Reid is coached by Dave McGinnis and Ernie Rose.

It was also a repeat championship in Public Forum Debate, where three teams from Des Moines Roosevelt High School were declared co-champions. The team of Mike Flannery and Sam Roeder and the team of Alex Patch and Sarah Larson closed out the final round; Alex and Sarah coached over fellow Des Moines Roosevelt debaters Catherine Chiodo and Minh Tam Le in semifinals. Congratulations to Team Roosevelt on this accomplishment! (The championship teams from Des Moines Roosevelt are pictured along with their coaches.)

Mike, Sam, Alex, Sarah, Catherine, and Minh are coached by Harry Strong and Nathan Fredericks.

Finally, in policy debate, the Omaha Westside team of William Rafael and Landon Ross defeated the Maine East High School team of Anne Peter and Dina Saadeh to claim the coveted title. Congratulations to both teams!

Da Baby, aka SLP Leah Shapiro, is 3-1.
Louie and Talia from SLP are 2-2.
Hopkins EN and JO are each 3-1.
Yale and Honda hit in a 3-0 round.
Reid and Regan LaBounty hit in a 3-0 round.

That’s most of what I know.

Valley YZ (Yale Zhu) is 5-0, along with Hopkins LS (SL?). They are not debating round 6 due to side constraint.

Valley RB (Reid Brown), no relation to Ross, is 4-1. So are: Valley NM (Nick Mylan), and Valley AK (Alex Kramer, no relation to the popular Russian-made assault rifle.)

Bettendorf HW (Honda Wang) is 4-1.

Scarsdale will hopefully return to this tournament someday. We’ve had scheduling conflicts this year and last.

Major congrats to Leah on making it to quarters (as a sixth grader, eclipsing Catherine’s previous unofficial age record of clearing as a seventh grader), Talia on making octos, and Louie for being eighth speaker and seventeenth seed, missing outrounds on points (after being pulled up in the bump round to hit Reid). All three of you worked really hard and did an awesome job, so, good job.

Also congrats to Valley and Hopkins on generally tearing it up all weekend.

Having now attended the GMNC for 8 or 9 years, I can definitively say that while the tournament is always high-quality and lots of fun, this was the best event ever. The judging pool was *incredible.* There were 9-judge panels in semis and all were “A” judges. The entire event was single-flighted, with excellent judging in practically every round. The schedule was sane, leaving plenty of time for dinner on Friday night. The pool in LD was large and competitive.

I encourage any team from across the country to bring their novice students to the GMNC.

Just a brief posting thanking Iowa City West on a remarkably well run Novice Nationals this year. Tab did a great job. The tournament ran AHEAD of schedule. All events were completed on time or earlier. Our coaches value this tournament for the “bonding” experience with our novices. I also felt the judging pools this year were solid. Having read our ballots, we received some first class judging comments which are of significant value to our coaches and students. For all who judged and took the time to write the best ballots we’ve seen all year, Thank You!
