Chris Theis Defends Iowa Round Robin Title
IOWA CITY, Iowa — A flock of eight spectacular, bronze hawks were perched in the hallways here at the University of Iowa. These commemorative awards were presented to the debaters who advanced to the Elite Eight at this year’s Iowa Round Robin!
The by-invitation tournament, hosted by the A. Craig Baird Debate Forum at the University of Iowa, came to a close this afternoon with a final round featuring Apple Valley High School’s Chris Theis and Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School’s Paul Tyger. Chris defeated Paul on a 3-0 decision to defend his title. (This is not only the second time Chris has won the Iowa Round Robin: it’s actually the third time in a row he has advanced to finals.)
Congratulations to both debaters!
Chris coached by Pam Cady Wycoff, Cherian Koshy, and Tim Hogan. Paul is coached by Jerry Crist, Gary Johnson, and Murvin Auzenne.

My understanding, from Saboor’s conversation with Paul — we’re at the airport right now in Newark — is that there are twelve people in the field this year. The tournament will have three pods of four folks each, with each person facing each other twice (once as aff, once as neg). My understanding as that the tournament will still break to a bracket starting with quarters. I’ll confirm this once I’m there, but that’s the Strake Jesuit PT report from Iowa City.

3 pods to 8 debaters clearing… that means two from each pod, with the 7th and 8th being a third from their pod.
Very strange bracket. Assuming pods A and C have three debaters clear out of four, and B has 2 of 4, the bracket might look like:
A1 vs. C3
B1 vs. A3
C1 vs. B2
A2 vs. C2
strange.

i don’t know if there will be eight debaters in quarters. the 7th and 8th seeds may be byes.

March 14th, 2008 17:35
that would make more sense. #1 and #2 get byes, 3-8 debate. I think that’s what they did the year I was there, though I can’t exactly remember.

re: jay’s comment - my junior year they did partial octas (top two seeds got byes). no clue about this year, its a much smaller field than when i attended so that obviously changes things.

They’ve released pods; they just have last names on them, and there are a couple I don’t know (sorry to those people), but here’s the pool:
(1) Apple Valley CT (Chris Theis)
(3) Apple Valley MK (Michelle Keohene)
(3) Bronx MD (Matt Dunay)
(1) Bronx SS (Saboor Sheerazi)
(2) Meadows AK (Adrienne Keamy)
(3) St. Louis Park CT (Catherine Tarsney)
(2) St. Louis Park LS (Leah Shapiro)
(2) Strake PT (Paul Tyger)
(3) Walt Whitman BL (Ben Lewis)
(2) Walt Whitman EM (Emily Massey)
(1) Winer?
(1) Young?

RE: Break procedure
The top two seeds out of each pod will advance. The top two students overall from the remaining students will advance. Seeds will be determined by prelim record for the quarters debate. Scholarships go to the semifinalists.
Rounds begin at 9am tomorrow. No disclosure so Jon will post results tomorrow night.
Rock on.

Congratulations to Chris and Paul!
I’d just like to say that, every time I run a tournament, I strive to be the best host possible. I try to make sure all the attending competitors and coaches and judges are happy, well fed, and well taken care of. I try to make sure that they are treated to enjoyable rounds by ensuring my best to have fierce competition in a friendly environment.
Really, though, I’ve come to realize that every time I run a tournament, I’m just striving to do what Paul Bellus has mastered. This is my second time at the Iowa Round Robin and I must say that it sets the standard for hospitality. Paul’s ability to attract a competitive field and provide said field with excellent critics is just awesome. I can only say that if you are fortunate enough to receive an invitation to this event in the future, you should absolutely make sure to come. You will not regret it. The preparation for post-season tournaments is invaluable, but the experience itself is what makes me want to come back year after year.

I should own up - it was not Christian Tarsney pulling double duty and judging 2 different quarterfinal debates - that 3rd judge on the panel between Thies and Winer was me.
I’d also like to add congratulations to the debaters in this field - this, as it normally is, was a great tournament and Bellus was the usual incredible host.

The split (3-2) in semis (Chris v. Adrienne) was interesting. Who was aff?
Can anyone talk about arguments that were being run/interesting positions?
Congrats to all!
Posted from: 75.134.137.132
March 17th, 2008 09:41
Mr. Timmons, I was the one affirming in that round. The round basically came down to an extension from the AC that said all offensive arguments have to be linked to a standard. There was a non-violence under view that linked to neither standard directly. In the 2AR, because of a lack of time, I only went for the no link argument and not any of the others. The breakdown of the judges then was essentially a policy vs LD split based on whether a standard link was necessary. I am sure that Jon, or someone else on that panel would be able to give a better explanation from a judges point of view though.

AT - Severson’s decision was essentially: I don’t care if you say things must be linked to a standard, you still have defend your assumptions (re: the violence bad off-case). And, like Chris said, all he went for was the you-must-link arg and substantively dropped the off. Hope that helps.

Thanks to Paul Bellus, the rest of the Iowa team, and staff for their generosity and hospitality. It’s unheard of for a competitive college team to take the time two weeks before the NDT to spend time hosting and judging a high school LD round robin. We certainly appreciate everything that you do to make this experience a positive one for the students including holding this overwhelmingly generous event. It was also great to see Dr. Dave Hingstman and debate legend Jonathan Massey judging rounds. As I said to Dan in semis, it’s not often that we are the odd ones out on the panel and it’s certainly not often that one is able to be humbled by a truly distinguished panel.
