Emma Pierson Wins WACFL Metrofinals
Heather Menefee Takes J.V. Title

Ellen Noble and Emma Pierson
SOUTH RIDING, Va. — The WACFL Metrofinal Championships — sponsored by the Washington-Arlington Catholic Forensic League — are the joint championships for the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia area. This year’s installment was held at Freedom High School.
The Metrofinals also double as the qualifier for the NCFL Grand National Tournament. As a result, the debaters are divided into the two respective dioceses — Washington (D.C./Maryland) and Arlington (Virginia) — for prelims in the varsity division. Then, the tournament breaks to semifinals, pitting the first seed in Washington against the second seed in Arlington, and the first in Arlington against the second in Washington. The J.V. division is combined throughout the tournament.
In the final round of the varsity tournament, Emma Pierson of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology defeated Ellen Noble of Walt Whitman High School on a 3-0 decision.

Heather Menefee and Akash Gupta
It was the same match-up of schools in the junior varsity division, with a reversal in results: Walt Whitman’s Heather Menefee defeated Thomas Jefferson’s Akash Gupta on a 2-1 decision. Congratulations to all four debaters!
Emma and Akash are coached by Sherwood Williams. Ellen and Heather are coached by Anjan Choudhury, Tanya Choudhury, and Elyse Lyons.
