Millburn Closes Out New Jersey State Tournament

Ben Yu Takes J.V. Championship
posted by Jon Cruz on March 8th, 2008

FLEMINGTON, N.J. — The New Jersey Forensic League State Championships, hosted at Hunterdon Central High School, is drawing to a close, but it will not feature a final round in varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate this year…because Millburn High School’s Usha Sahay and Tess McNulty have closed it out! In a reversal of tournament policy from the past — a policy which, in fact, affected a close-out from Millburn just two years ago — the two debaters were in fact recognized as co-champions.

Tess and Usha are coached by Brian Raymond.

The full-service tournament featured three full divisions of Lincoln-Douglas debate. In the junior varsity competition, Whippany Park High School’s Ben Yu bested Randolph High School’s Sohum Doshi on a 3-0 decision to win the state championship. Congratulations to both debaters!

Ben is coached by Rebecca Hansen; Sohum is coached by Peter H. Bond.

A final congratulations is also in order for the champion and runner-up in the tournament’s novice competition. A 3-0 decision also signaled the conclusion of the tournament, as Montville High School’s Dan Brenner defeated Timothy Christian School’s Ruth Fong to take the title.

Dan is coached by Mary Gormley; Ruth is coached by Jonathan Barr.

Though unconfirmed, every Randolph varsity debater believes that he is 0-2.

CONGRATULATIONS! Those are some very fine debaters and programs in those final rounds.

    Any more results?

Are Tess and Usha co-champions, or did only one get the title? I seem to recall that when Greg Hertz and Brandon Sherman closed out, Brandon was recognized as the champion and Greg as the runner-up.

    to answer Jon’s concerns -

although it is true that greg hertz got kinda screwed over two years ago, it appears that the NJFL has changed their policy - usha and tess were declared co-champions. congrats again!

congrats are also in order to the entire ridge team, who pulled first in sweepstakes in debate, speech, AND overall. NUTZ.

finally, congrats to ben yu for being a baller

    Thanks.

I find it weird that Varun was last seed, (he went 3-2, high speaks). Hitting him so early was depressing :[ Good round man!

A lot of people who really deserved to break didn’t. Special Thanks and Congratulations to Mikey Hassin, Arbi, Dan Chen, Jackie, and Kevin in JV. See you in Varsity next year.

And also congratulations to Max Chang, David Chen, Alan Tong, Alex Castro, Mike Calavano, and Glen Boden in Varsity. Special good job to Max Chang for giving Usha her one loss of the tournament :)

Oh and thank you Jon Cruz for highlighting NJ’s State Championships.

For anybody who was curious, I picked up vs Varun 2-1, beat Freehold 3-0, then Doshi 3-0.

Freehold picked up his quarters 2-1, Ben Hsu dissented.

Montville picked up her quarters 2-1, and Doshi picked up 3-0.

Doshi beat Montville on a 3-0 also.

Yeah, I have no idea what I was thinking.

I said that “are is the past tense of is” about 4-5 times.

But Doshi and I were so caught up, he didn’t ask me about it, and I didn’t catch it.

Anyways, the judge on the Laptop (Flittner), wrote “ARE IS THE PAST TENSE OF IS WHAT!?!?!” on the Ballot in the AFF comment sections.

Apparently that was all he heard from me =P

I have to apologize for absolutely butchering the English language =[
