David Donatti Wins TFA State

Winston Churchill Takes Sweepstakes Award; Grapevine Wins Naegelin Traveling Trophy
posted by Greg Jeffers on March 8th, 2008

COPPELL, Tex. — After battling through snow, round cancellations, and the other debaters, two people emerged from the giant field to finals of the Lanier Law Firm TFA State Tournament.

Those two people were David Donatti of Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School and Becca Traber of the Kinkaid School. Becca affirmed and David negated. On a 3-0 decision — with Eric Melin, Ajay Ketkar, Geoff Caffo adjudicating — David won the tournament. Congratulations to both competitors!

David is coached by Gary Johnson, Jerry Crist, and Murvin Auzenne; Becca is coached by Eric Emmerson and Ryan Cooper.

TFA State is the largest statewide championship in the United States, and, as such, its sweepstakes trophies are particularly coveted. This year’s first place championship trophy was awarded to Winston Churchill High School. The Naegelin Traveling Trophy was presented to Grapevine High School. Congratulations to both programs, and to their coaches!

Winston Churchill is coached by Kandi King; Grapevine is coached by Jane Boyd.

the break list and Triple Octos bracket is available on the joyoftournament website.

Unfortunetly, someone needs to get the photo of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round match ups.

I think the tournament administrators made the best out of a less than ideal situation. Going to partial triples ensured all 3-1s were able to clear. I think the tournament provided a GREAT model for making changes on the fly and still giving all the students a fair opportunity to compete. There have been a lot of complaints on VBD about tournaments that made poor decisions when in the crunch. I think the TFA tournament’s solution recognized how much time and effort each of the competitors put forth. Hopefully, other tournaments will use this as a model

Texas debate must be pretty intense if these people are getting downed, not just simply defeated.

And to Strake for qualifying 10 debaters to TFA and clearing 7 to outrounds, in a field this competitive with 158 debaters that’s pretty awesome.

    Congrats to Mr. Donatti.

Congrats to Joan who debated very well in semis. One great thing about TFA this year was the amount of successful female debaters. Only one ballot away from having two female debaters in finals, something TFA state hasn’t seen for a long time.
