Chris Catterton is Harker Champion
Avi Arfin Wins Third Novice Title
SAN JOSE, Cali. — This year’s edition of the Harker School’s Howard and Diana Nichols Invitational has concluded, and the final four bids to the Tournament of Champions in Lincoln-Douglas debate have been awarded. The tournament ended with a final round that featured Analy High School’s Chris Catterton and Mountain View High School’s Daniel Khalessi.
The round was adjudicated by Adam Nelson, Ashan Peiris, and Kyle Kimball; the three critics voted unanimously for Chris. Congratulations to both debaters!
Chris is coached by Lynette Williamson, Mike Spirtos, and Corbin Cass; Daniel is coached by Eric Palmer and Stephen Hess.
Congratulations to Palo Alto High School’s Avi Arfin for winning the novice division on a 3-0 decision over Torrey Pines High School’s Naveen Krishnamurthi. Avi is coached by Jennie Savage and Dan Sheehan; Naveen is coached by Chris Drake and Vivian Feig.

If DFK falls, it will only be as the prelude to a triumphant, Rocky-esque return to greatness. Cue the theme music and a montage of DFK cutting cards, doing redos and running up a flight of stairs to get to his round.

Congratulations to Chris and Daniel on making it to finals! I understand Daniel’s semis round with Matt was very intense, and I wish I could have seen it.
Matt’s heard me say it throughout the tournament via cell phone, but I just want to say it here publicly: there are few folks in this activity as smart, hard-working, and dedicated as Matt Dunay. I am so proud of you, Matt, and I know you were a fantastic ambassador both for Bronx Science and for the Northeast at this tournament.
As a coach, I also want to relay how very thankful I am for Adam Nelson’s hospitality this weekend. It can be an intimidating experience — even when you compete nearly every weekend — to fly to a tournament with your parent and no teammates, especially when that tournament features a lot of schools that have brought huge numbers of kids. I know from Matt how much Adam went out of his way to make this experience a wonderful one for him. Given the number of pre-tournament e-mails Adam graciously exchanged with me, this wasn’t a surprise.
The bottom line: I would strongly recommend you include Harker on your travel schedule. The Westchester Classic — which I heartily endorse for all teams in our area - precludes me from attending personally, but for those who can make it to California, this was unquestionably a wonderful experience. And if you can’t come with your team, I think Matt’s experience demonstrates that you shouldn’t feel overwhelmed: the tournament will do everything it can to make you feel welcome. Thanks, Adam, and thanks, Harker!
And thanks, Jennie, for coordinating this coverage!

congrats to the rest of the outround participants as well, particularly catterton for taking down the title.
finally, a huge thanks to adam and his crew for the most hospitable tournament i’ve ever been at. i’ve never seen a tournament go so far out of its way to make life easier for judges and students. on that note, a huge thanks to the harker kid who got me food today. in my haste, i forgot to ask for your name, sorry!

I’d like to give another shout-out to “Dr. Nelson” and the Harker team for running a great tournament. The hospitality was amazing this year. Not only did Adam run things efficiently and effectively, but he also maintained a really cheerful and friendly demeanor the whole way through. I definitely second Jon in highly recommending this tournament to those seeking an enjoyable competitive experience as well as the beauty of California weather in March. =)

Dr. Nelson - you ran an excellent tournament; the judging pool was the best I’ve seen in a while, all the rounds were on time, and the food was spectacular to say the very least. Every kid who sported a “Harker Forensics” shirt had very positive feedback on the work you’ve done at this school. Swell tournament.

Congrats to Catterton for the sick pwnage. Congrats to Andrew McCarty for making Semis after learning how to do LD on Tuesday. And a thanks goes out to everyone who helped to run the tournament. The location was great, the event ran on time and smoothly, the judging was phenominal, and whenever there was a problem, the debaters and staff were willing to help fix it, and did so happily. It was a very nice change in comparison to the always inevitable delays that come up at tournaments (not to say anyone is to blame, things happen), and on Saturday night, when things started to get bogged down and Doubles were going to be late, they gave everyone a heads up on the Schematics so everyone knew what was happening.

Well the Harker Eagles flew again! Lovely tournament. Really amazing field! Thanks to all. Congratulations to all of you. Some amazing rounds.
I really love this tournament because many of the novices have found their wings, and for some of the departing seniors it is our last chance to see them locally in circuit style.
The sophomores are getting frighteningly better too.
The last preliminary round - not in the go bracket -I judged two of the best non senior debaters I ever have seen ( better than some I saw at TOC last year) so I look forward to seeing them do well in the next few years.

We (all three directors who ran the tournament) are glad you all enjoyed our tournament. Next year, the Harker tournament will again offer LD, PF, Policy and Student Congress and will be held March 6 through 8. The Round Robin for LD will be held March 5 and the Public Forum Round Robin will be held March 8.
Looking forward to seeing you all here next year in San Jose.
