Matt Thomas Wins Westchester Classic
Bronx Science Closes Out Novice Tournament
Lexington's Lara Townzen & Alex Zendeh Win Policy Title
Bronx Science, Edgemont Share Novice Policy Title

Rob Zambito and Matt Thomas
SHRUB OAK, N.Y. — This year’s edition of Lakeland High School’s Westchester Classic concluded with a final round that featured Monticello High School’s Matt Thomas and Newburgh Free Academy’s Rob Zambito. The round was adjudicated by Elizabeth Tam, Shea Strausman, and Brian Kwik; the three critics voted unanimously for Matt. Congratulations to both debaters!
Matt is coached by Sabrina Graham; Rob is coached by Sheryl Kaczmarek.
As this report was filed, the policy debate tournament was still in progress. The tournament offers bids to the Tournament of Champions at the semifinal round in policy debate; there is also a competitive novice division and a junior varsity breakout from the non-advancing teams in the varsity division. (Policy results can now be found below.)
There was a junior varsity breakout in the Lincoln-Douglas debate division; it featured Hendrick Hudson High School’s Alli Gofman and Berkeley Carroll School’s Dylan Scher. Dylan won the round. Congratulations to both debaters! Dylan is coached by Jim Shapiro; Alli is coached by Jim Menick.

Carolyn Clendenin and Matt Ross
The novice division concluded not with a final round but a close out: first seed Matt Ross and second seed Carolyn Clendenin, both from the Bronx High School of Science, were declared co-champions. Congratulations to both debaters!
Matt and Carolyn are coached by Jon Cruz.
UPDATE: The policy debate tournament concluded on Sunday morning with a final round that featured Lexington High School’s Lara Townzen and Alex Zendeh and Newburgh Free Academy’s Neil Bapodra and Neil Patel. The round was adjudicated by Stefan Bauschard, Patrick Waldinger, and Brian Manuel. On a 3-0 decision, Lexington won the Westchester Classic.
Lara and Alex are coached by Maggie Berthiaume and Michael Antonnucci; Neil and Neil are coached by Sheryl Kaczmarek.
As with Lincoln-Douglas debate, the policy tournament featured a J.V. breakout. Two teams from the Bronx High School of Science advanced from the semifinal round of the breakout to close out the the junior varsity event. The team of Ian Irlander and Scott Khamphoune and the team of Zack Elias and Dee Yusuf can now lay claim to this year’s junior varsity title! Ian, Scott, Zack, and Dee are coached by Sarah M. Heaton, David Marks, and Jon Cruz.
Co-champions were declared in a novice policy tournament that initially cleared to quarterfinals. Given the lateness of the hour, in lieu of a final round, the team of Irene Bruce and Julia Reinitz from Bronx Science and the team of Eugene Kim and Helen Xu from Edgemont were named co-champions. Irene and Julia are coached by Sarah M. Heaton and Jon Cruz; Eugene and Helen are coached by Ben Wittwer.
And with the champions of the Westchester Classic determined, the regular season has come to a close in the Northeast.

In response to comment 13, I’d just like to say: thanks, Shea! You’re the most expensive complainer I’ve ever had to deal with in my life! :o)
Matt, Carolyn — continuing Bronx Science heg! And congratulations to Arielle for being top speaker and a quarterfinalist, and to Seth, Vineet, and Abhi for their outround appearances. (And yay to Ellie for the speaker award!) Special shout-outs to our policy teams shortly — but yay to Andrew, David, Saieed, and Paula for being in semis!
And yay to Matt and Rob! And yay to Ben, Sam, and Nicole!
The best part of this tournament: SAGAR RAMBHIA.
And finally, I really think that Jason Zhou deserves a high-five for being a traitor, doing policy debate this weekend, and clearing. Nice job.

Oh, I forgot. In case anyone at the tournament was curious. Tab error made me a low seed. I was entered as a 3-2 rather than what ought to have been 4-1. not complaining though.

Yes — sorry about that. To all who are wondering: an emergency caused the judge to have to leave the round he was supposed to judge between Matt and Sam in prelims late on Friday night; the round was made up during an off flight the following morning with Jim Menick adjudicating. When we corrected the round on the contestant cards, I must have typed in the result in backwards. I know that it was read to me correctly.
This backwards entry was put in after the Lakeland round checker did his duty for round three flawlessly. I’m tempted to find a way to blame the weather delays, or blame my lack of sleep, or blame something else, but really, that’s my fault. (And mine specifically, not Jim Menick’s, who was in tab with me.) I apologize!
