CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The largest tournament of the regular season has come to a close. Over seven hundred Lincoln-Douglas debaters between both varsity and junior varsity joined thousands of others of debaters and speakers across all the forensic events on the lovely campus of Harvard University for three days of fierce competition.

Monday elimination rounds made way for a final varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate showcase that featured Berkeley Carroll School’s Peter Damrosch affirming against last year’s runner-up, Trinity Preparatory School’s Jake Nebel.

On a 4-3 decision, Jake defeated Peter to take the tournament title. This marks the third time Jake has won an octafinals bid tournament this season. It also marks only the second time Peter has debated this season. Congratulations to both debaters!

Peter is coached by Jim Shapiro; Jake is coached by Petey Gil-Montllor and Darcy Butrimas.

I’m feeling partial quadruple doubles (breaking all winning records). Based on what I’m looking at, that means that 126 people would break, while 205 people would be left hanging…

orrel, for your information, all of bronx works very hard. including seth, vineet, saboor, melanie, josh, ely, emilijia, and others that i am forgetting.

many debaters, not only from bronx, but other schools, did not break that deserved to break. the judging pool was dismal, and the 2 dollar water made the tournament particularly irratating.

Also, condolences to Courtney Nunley who I heard went 5-1 but didn’t break due to tab error.

To the person who commented on the $2 water: It was sold for a dollar less on the other side of the cafeteria.

Congrats to Courtney Nunley who went 5-1 113 H/L but didn’t clear because the results to Rd 4 weren’t entered correctly in the computer.

It is definitely interesting that tournaments continue not to either force judges to disclose or allow for coaches to review ballots in a timely manner.

It’s always dissapointing when preparation and execution go unrewarded. I truly hope that our unfortunate experience will convince some tournament directors to consider changing their policies. I think it’s really unfair to the people who volunteer their time to tab and help run the tournaments when the tournament structure forces them to either be flawless in their tabulation or have inaccurate results that can’t be corrected.

    Sincerely,

    Sam Duby

    Sam & Courtney -

That totally sucks. To be able to rise above the randomness (not saying good or bad) of Harvard and to see it unrewarded totally sucks.

I agree that there should be some check-back. Obviously Min & Liz are super busy in the tabroom and having a more democratized check would be a good thing for sure.

Congratulations, Jake on your THIRD octas title this season. As I’ve said many times, you are one of the very smartest, most modest, and very best debaters I have ever seen. This is another well-deserved, hard-earned feather in your cap.
    .
Congratulations to you as well, Peter, on making it to finals…an incredibly impressive feat, given that this was only your second tournament this season! Wow.
    .
More on this in the next Ask Cruz, but Jake is, I believe, poised to eventually overcome Jason Baldwin’s record. Quite impressive.
    .
Special shout out to Bobby for making to the top eight out of around 350 debaters as a *sophomore*, continuing the hot streak that began last week with his big win at Scarsdale. I am very proud of you! Also, a special shout out to Kristina and Francisco for bid #5 in policy debate.
    .
As a Great Neck South alumnus, I want to congratulate Jesse Klinger on making team history by becoming the first GNS debater ever to earn a bid to the TOC. You are incredible, man. GO REBELS!
    .
Also for Ask Cruz: are we now the team with the most ever one-bid debaters? Maybe not. But five? Oy. :o)
    .
Finally, I also just wanted to echo what has been posted before and extend congratulations and regrets to Courtney, who really is one of the very nicest people in this activity.

Big props to Jake and Peter for really outstanding runs (especially to Jake for making adjustments to that Aff that really made it work much better to me). And I concur with Sam above: We had several judges tell us that “they didn’t know if disclosure was allowed.” Maybe even a clear statement from the tournament encouraging as much would provide an easy check on what is a massive burden on tab. Courtney, I’m really sorry this happened to you in your last TOC bid invitational.

And, of course, I could not be more proud of Whitman — breaking 8 in VLD and 3 in JVLD! I especially Mr. Ben Lewis, who started this year in JV and ends up in semifinals of an Octos bid as a sophomore, especially with some really tough opponents like Usha and Ravi. You have a great career ahead of you Ben! And Jon, I totally sympathize with you as we join you in the 5 one-bid club as well.

Most importantly, I slso wanted to extend condolences on behalf of Whitman to the Holy Ghost Prep team for their tragic loss this weekend. We could not believe it when we heard the news, and we wish them the very best in what must be a very difficult time for their team.

Also congrats to Ellen and the triples panel screw D:

Tess who needs to not drown her sorrows with hydrogenated fats.

And Ben who got to semis by eating his opponents. Congrats after many bid rounds.

congrats to ppl. there are lots of them.
mostly though to my favorite MR. ASHISH GUPTA, who had a ridiculously intense prelim draw and came out of it with a 5-1 record. that’s craaazy. morristown is very proud. i love this kid.

harvard this year was really fun and, hmmm…. kind of cute : )

Congrats to all of the whitmanites who did well or got better or learned anything at all across all of the events. Thanks to Anjan, Tanya, and Elyse for somehow managing the Whitman army, despite multiple contractions of the Harvard Illness. Congrats to Ravi, Usha, Kevin, and Peter for some sweet outrounds, and my prelim opponents for good rounds. There are others who deserve recognition, but Harvard is too big of a tournament to list them all.
    .
Special props go out to The One and Only Matt Hershey for totally owning me in our in-round rap battle.

Just adding to my above list: SeƱor Petey Gil-Montllor should well earn a Coach of the Year award. What he has done with the Trinity Prep LD squad since he graduated high school is remarkable.

Did anyone hear of a debater/speaker participating @ Harvard this weekend passing away? Apparently some one from Holy Ghost in Philly/PA?

On the front page of VBD there is a link to an article I posted about the tragic death of Yuriy Tutko, who was indeed a speaker (interp) from Holy Ghost.

I guess there’s no chance VBD would be covering a finals bid tourney like Vestavia Hills this weekend?
