Becca Traber Wins Berkeley

Matt Kawahara and Becca Traber
BERKELEY, Cali. — This weekend, 298 varsity Lincoln-Douglas debaters vied for the championship of the 2008 California Invitational. And, after eight preliminary rounds, and elimination rounds starting with partial triples, there were two: the Kinkaid School’s Becca Traber and Valley High School’s Matt Kawahara. Congratulations to the finalists!
A panel of Ryan Lawrence, Alex Smith, Adam Nelson, Julian Switala, and Byron Ruby adjudicated. On a 4-1 decision — Switala dissented — the judges awarded the championship to Becca. This marks the first time this season that a senior has won an octafinals bid tournament. Indeed, this was the first time this season that the final round of such a tournament did not feature a junior. (Matt is a sophomore.)
Becca is coached by Eric Emerson and Ryan Cooper; Matt is coached by Dave McGinnis and Ernie Rose.
Jennie Savage and Adam Nelson contributed to this report.

A huge congratulations and many thanks to LD tab director Dave Huston and tournament director Greg Achten for providing a well-run, efficient, thorough, accessible, humanely scheduled tournament for everyone. With 298 in varsity LD, plus JV LD, varsity CX, JV CX, Pofo, Congress, IEs and everything in between, I can’t imagine how you manage to pull off such a near-flawless tournament, but you do. You’ve got my respect and admiration!

Vestavia Hills RM def. Los Altos DM 2-1 (?, *Nelson, ?)
if you were in tab and you’re reading this.. shame shame shame on you.
Posted from: 63.246.171.199
February 18th, 2008 22:16
I’m confused about
“Los Altos DM coach over Mountain View DG”
Is Los Altos secretly the same school as Mountain View, or did Moerener and Garber just decide not to debate?
Posted from: 128.12.77.248
February 18th, 2008 22:18
actually it’s not shame on you if they were qualified judges so i guess i should be asking if anyone knows who these question marks are.
Posted from: 98.199.112.103
February 18th, 2008 22:35
devin, los altos and mountain view are coached by the same staff and so they decided it would just be a walk-over by higher seed

they may have been “qualified” in the sense that they were familiar with ld technicality but in terms of making a coherent decision they were just terrible. mr. nelson was very correct in that round.

Congrats to Becca on a well deserved win… but you did break the Junior streak on octos wins, so I am a little conflicted.
Also, the panel for my round against Monte Vista TG in octos was Parker* Smith, and another girl.

Congratulations to Becca on this huge win…and on representing her class in breaking the juniors’ stranglehold on the octas bid tournament this year. :o)
.
I haven’t had the opportunity to judge Matt again since the Iowa Round Robin last year, but I was very impressed by his considerable talent as a freshman. This is a well-deserved final round appearance.

Since Moerner hadn’t debated before octos since he just advanced without debating, does he get another TOC bid? I seem to remember a TOC rule somewhere that said that a debater must have competed in at least one elimination round before a TOC bid would be awarded, does advancing without debating count?

congrats of course to becca and matt for their showings, as well as the many many others who shone here. i wanted to especially congratulate the berkeley tournament tab room for a flat-out amazing showing. i’ve never seen a tournament run that well and with so few complaints; that was truly a clinic.
in the interest of completing results, both the octas and quarters rounds i judged were 3-0s.

Those results - labeled 2008 results - are actually 2007 results, as near as I can tell. (ie Valley David Gobberdiel and Sam Hogan did not compete at this year’s tournament.)

any word about speaker awards?
Posted from: 140.247.250.79
February 20th, 2008 02:54
Correction about MVLA - it’s not like there were just two random schools in California and they decided to act as one team because they both employed me and Stephen Hess. Mountain View and Los Altos are two high schools in one school district. They have had one debate team for some time now, but TOC policy bars us from entering them as a single team (MVLA) at tournaments. This is a matter of some confusion because the schools have pretty distinct names instead of something like “Mountain View East” and “Mountain View West”.
Congrats to Matt, Rosser and the Valley coaching staff on a great showing; and congrats to Rusty Mawn on a nice breakout and the qual. This guy might make some noise at TOC too…
Posted from: 68.175.60.130

Speaking of MVLA — congratulations to Eric, Stephen, and all the debaters at this joint program. The results here and elsewhere demonstrate a really serious depth of talent.
