Matt Kawahara and Becca Traber

BERKELEY, Cali. — This weekend, 298 varsity Lincoln-Douglas debaters vied for the championship of the 2008 California Invitational. And, after eight preliminary rounds, and elimination rounds starting with partial triples, there were two: the Kinkaid School’s Becca Traber and Valley High School’s Matt Kawahara. Congratulations to the finalists!

A panel of Ryan Lawrence, Alex Smith, Adam Nelson, Julian Switala, and Byron Ruby adjudicated. On a 4-1 decision — Switala dissented — the judges awarded the championship to Becca. This marks the first time this season that a senior has won an octafinals bid tournament. Indeed, this was the first time this season that the final round of such a tournament did not feature a junior. (Matt is a sophomore.)

Becca is coached by Eric Emerson and Ryan Cooper; Matt is coached by Dave McGinnis and Ernie Rose.

Jennie Savage and Adam Nelson contributed to this report.

Since Moerner hadn’t debated before octos since he just advanced without debating, does he get another TOC bid? I seem to remember a TOC rule somewhere that said that a debater must have competed in at least one elimination round before a TOC bid would be awarded, does advancing without debating count?

Those results - labeled 2008 results - are actually 2007 results, as near as I can tell. (ie Valley David Gobberdiel and Sam Hogan did not compete at this year’s tournament.)

Correction about MVLA - it’s not like there were just two random schools in California and they decided to act as one team because they both employed me and Stephen Hess. Mountain View and Los Altos are two high schools in one school district. They have had one debate team for some time now, but TOC policy bars us from entering them as a single team (MVLA) at tournaments. This is a matter of some confusion because the schools have pretty distinct names instead of something like “Mountain View East” and “Mountain View West”.

Congrats to Matt, Rosser and the Valley coaching staff on a great showing; and congrats to Rusty Mawn on a nice breakout and the qual. This guy might make some noise at TOC too…

Speaking of MVLA — congratulations to Eric, Stephen, and all the debaters at this joint program. The results here and elsewhere demonstrate a really serious depth of talent.

Stephanie- there were way too many and it would be very difficult, considering there were about 300 LD competitors and 8 preliminary rounds.
