SCARSDALE, N.Y. — After two days of intense competition, educational rounds, and generous amounts of Dr. Brown’s Black Cherry Soda, the fourth annual Scarsdale Invitational has drawn to a close.

The tournament began with a field of seventy Lincoln-Douglas debaters and ended — after clearing the top twenty-four debaters into elimination rounds — with a final round featuring the Bronx High School of Science’s Bobby Esnard and Stuyvesant High School’s Georgia Stasinopoulos. The round was adjudicated by Peter Petraro, Jimi Morales, and Alex Weaver. On a 2-1 decision — Petraro sat out — Bobby was declared the winner of this year’s tournament and was presented the Jeffrey Williams Lincoln-Douglas Debate Championship by Joe Vaughan.

Bobby is coached by Jon Cruz, Douglas Jeffers, and Taarini Vohra; Georgia is coached by Julie Sheinman and Caitlin Halpern.

Fifty-eight novices from across the Northeast formed a highly competitive field; all debaters with a winning record cleared. The final round featured the Bronx High School of Science’s Matt Ross and Hunter College High School’s Diana Li and was adjudicated by a panel of student critics from both Scarsdale and Stuyvesant High Schools. On a 5-4 decision, Matt won the round and, accordingly, won the novice division.

Matt is coached by Jon Cruz; Diana is coached by Noel Selegzi.

Finally, the final round of Public Forum Debate featured Regis High School’s Ben Buchanan and Brian O’Reilly and the Bronx High School of Science’s Stefan Kazmi and Laura Maschler. The four debaters emerged from a competitive field that drew twenty-eight teams from a large number of programs in the region. On a 2-1 decision, Regis defeated Bronx Science to win the tournament. Congratulations to both teams!

Stefan and Laura are coached by Joseph Gazzola and Jon Cruz; Ben and Brian are coached by Eric Di Michele.

I would like to start this off by saying that Scarsdale was a fantastic tournament. The Schedule was followed perfectly (Kudos to TAB), the judging pool was excellent, the food was amazing (and free =), but beyond that the field was extremely competitive.

    I would like to thank:
    -Jon, well duh.
-Menick, Vaughan, and Kaz, for tabbing.
-Alex Weaver, for being an amazing judge and believing in me all the way to finals.
-Ken Hershey, without whom I would not have had a printed NC.
-The entire Scarsdale crew for an amazing tournament.

    Congrats are due to:
    -Vineet
-Georgia and Alli (our rounds were SO close)
    -Matt Ross
    -Abhi

BOBBY! MATT! STEFAN! LAURA! VINEET! ABHI! LEV! ROHAN! I am so proud of you! (I already told you this while we were *at* Scarsdale, but it is worth repeating!)
    .
We had a fantastic time at the Scarsdale Invitational, and not just because of the end results for us. This tournament’s rapid growth from just last year alone was amazing. Scarsdale did a great job both in hiring out fantastic neutral judges and in encouraging schools to bring well-qualified critics. The tournament was efficient without being tiring and competitive without being cut-throat.
    .
Working in tab with Menick and Kaz was enjoyable as always, and a panel of three Hershey brothers was enough to keep my debate nerd excitement heightened, and the endless supply of Dr. Brown’s cream soda and black cherry soda did not disappoint, but the biggest satisfaction of the weekend was heading home with a group of enthusiastic, satisfied debaters motivated for both our next tournament and next year’s iteration of this tournament.
    .
Thanks, Joe, and thank you to all of the Scarsdale kids!
    .
P.S. On a non-Bronx Science note — special shout out to Alli Gofman on a breakout performance, and to Hen Hud in general for a great overall weekend!
