Saboor Sheerazi Wins Newark Debates
Bronx Science Also Wins Policy as Bencosme & Markoff Take Title

NEWARK, N.J. — East Side High School had played host to the Newark Debates for several years as the new Newark Science Park High School facility was under construction. This year, the tournament temporarily returned to East Side. And in the rooms of the building’s extensive third floor, a corps of intrepid debaters — who braved torrential rain and, in the case of those farther north, some truly severe ice and snow to come to the tournament — competed over the course of two days to vie for one of the Northeast’s most storied titles.
The final round pitted the Bronx High School of Science’s Saboor Sheerazi against Scarsdale High School’s Daniel Daks. Abdul Beretay, Chris Blaine, Lawrence Golden, Sean Mumper, and Andy Priester adjudicated. On a 3-2 decision — Blaine and Mumper dissented — Saboor defeated Daniel to win the championship. Congratulations to both competitors!
Saboor is coached by Jon Cruz, Douglas Jeffers, and Taarini Vohra; Daniel is coached by Joe Vaughan and Chetan Hertzig.
Congratulations are also in order for the Bronx High School of Science’s Francisco Bencosme and Andrew Markoff, and for Lexington High School’s Sriram Jayakumar and Adit Chipalkatti. The two teams advanced to the final round of the tournament’s long-standing policy debate division! Francisco and Andrew won the round on a 3-0, resulting in Bronx Science taking both tournament titles.
Francisco and Andrew are coached by Sarah M. Heaton, David Marks, and Jon Cruz; Sriram and Adit are coached by Maggie Berthiaume and Michael Antonucci.

I’ve been including Newark-related trivia at the bottom of each schem; round 4 or 5 will ask:
“So far, only one team ever has closed out this tournament in the semifinal round. What was the team, what was the year, and who was the coach? Bonus points if you can name all four debaters.”

Hen Hud- Noah Grabowitz, Justin Becker - Thats all I can guess.

Jon will I get a prize?
The correct answers are
1)The year was 2000
2) The debaters were; Noah Grabowitz, Jon Wedrogowski, Scott Becker and Jogn Olivieri
3) and the only part I’m unsure of… Jim Menick was the coach?

Congrats to Saboor and Daks on impressive performances. The Newark tournament with all of its kinks was still a very enjoyable experience. No the judging pool wasn’t the strongest you’ve ever seen, the competition wasn’t the most diverse, but still in a situation where the field was dominated by a few teams making pairings extremely difficult the tournament ran smoothly. I would be very interested to find out how many of the outrounds were won by the negative debaters. I know in both my rounds the negative debater won.

YAY Saboor, Seth, Matt, Vineet, and Arielle! YAY Francisco, Andrew, Zack, Dee, Allen, and Scott! And especially yay to the four stellar novices who competed in varsity this weekend, compiling 3-2 records and some very impressive wins. Nice job Bronx Army. :o)
…
I want to thank the Newark tournament directors for adapting to some very difficult logistical issues — including the need to temporarily move back to the East Side facility (instead of the still-so-new-the-paint-is-practically-still-wet Newark Science) and weather-related issues ranging torrential rain and snow/ice conditions — with grace and care for the competitors. The severe weather problems caused a number of last-minute drops, judge delays, and judge no-shows, and even forced the readjustment of the schedule. All of this was unavoidable and not the fault of the tournament. And while there were some (but not many) objections, ultimately, I think, the postponement of the third round was the right call to make from a safety and sleep issue. I hope many will return (and come for the first time) to this tournament next year when it’s back at Newark Science!
