Chris Theis is Barkley Forum Champion

Daniel Moerner and Chris Theis
ATLANTA, Ga. — The Lincoln-Douglas Debate competition at the Barkley Forum for High Schools has come to a close. This afternoon, Los Altos High School’s Daniel Moerner and Apple Valley High School’s Chris Theis were invited to participate in the Dale Lauder McCall Exhibition, the culminating event of Lincoln-Douglas Debate at this tournament. Following their victories in a series of tutorials — named in honor of some of the great coaches in the event — and speeches before the Exhibition acknowledging their coaches and other supporters, Daniel and Chris began the final debate.
It was adjudicated by a panel of five distinguished Key Coaches: Jay Rye, Sheryl Kaczmarek, David Huston, Ed Williams, and Fr. Raymond Hahn. On a 3-2 decision, the panel awarded the Silver Key to Chris Theis. Congratulations to both debaters!
Chris is coached by Pam Cady Wycoff, Cherian Koshy, and Tim Hogan; Daniel is coached by Eric Palmer and Stephen Hess.
(Chris Castillo, Todd Liipfert, and McLean Crichton for logging me in to the student network.)
I have posted a summary of the Opening Awards Ceremony, which included the induction of the new Key Coaches of the Barkley Forum, the naming of the Prose & Poetry Exhibition, and the presentation of the Paul Slappey Award for the Promotion of Diversity.

I just wanted to say props to Monticello and Whitman, you guys are tight as hell. Thanks to Chris Castillo, Sasha, and Sasha’s mom for giving us rides. That one policy debater who told me where the phantom room in Rich Memorial was. And Wade for pulling out when he entered too early (he’ll understand).

curious question:
i know that emory has a reputation for assigning key coaches to finals regardless of which events they have backgrounds in…I know Ms. Kaczmarek and Father Hahn both have debate backgrounds, i was wondering if anyone knew what the other finals judges’ backgrounds were?
Posted from: 67.165.106.132
January 28th, 2008 19:37
jay rye is a long-time coach and judge from the montgomery academy (AL). he judged LD pretty frequently when i was debating and i believe he still does. like most key coaches, he is probably not a ‘progressive’ judge but i always found him among the most consistent ‘traditional’ judges i had.
dave huston really should need no introduction.

Jay Rye, Montgomery Academy – LD and IE Coach, Dave Huston- Colleyville Heritage LD and CX Ed Williams- Calhoun – policy coach who also judges LD *Cheryl Kaczmarek,Newburg Free – LD and Policy. Father Hahn -Pelham champion coach and LD coach.
The coaches in the LD round were very qualified.
Congratulations to the Finals competitors and their coaches.

Jay Rye and Dave Huston are are fantastic LD judges. I haven’t seen Ed Williams judge before this final round, but he is a very respected policy coach of a great team.

January 28th, 2008 21:16
the consult sealand cp is way better than the invade sealand ac. it would feature great cards such as this one:
Consultation with Sealand is key – the US needs their overwhelming military power and diplomatic clout to solve. ABC News in 07: “Sealand boasts a military past like any other country, defending its sovereignty from outside threats.Former British army major, Paddy Roy Bates, began occupying the island with his family in 1967, declared it a state in international waters and gave himself the title “prince”. Britain’s Royal Navy attempted to evict him the following year but were unsuccessful. As they entered territorial waters, Roy of Sealand fired warning shots from the former fort.A judge then ruled in his favour that Sealand was outside British Government control as it was beyond the three-mile limit of the country’s waters.
In 1974, Roy of Sealand introduced a constitution.”
The implication is that Sealand is clearly more powerful than the British navy and is needed to sustain US hegemony.
