Isaac Bloch and Shadman Zaman
NEW YORK, N.Y. — The eighth annual Columbia Invitational has come to a close, bringing together one hundred varsity Lincoln-Douglas debaters in the heart of Manhattan. Sacred Heart High School’s Shadman Zaman and Berkeley Carroll School’s Isaac Bloch debated the final round. The face-off was adjudicated by Ali Huberlie, Anthony Berryhill, and Bryce Adams. On a 3-0 decision, Shadman defeated Isaac to win the tournament title, his second over the course of a single week. Congratulations to both competitors!

Shadman is coached by Beena Koshy and Chetan Hertzig; Isaac is coached by Jim Shapiro and Tommy Clancy.

Congratulations are also in order for Sacred Heart High School’s Kevin Fanning and Byram Hills High School’s Jeffrey March, who debated in the final round of the tournament’s large junior varsity tournament. The result of the J.V. final round mirrored its varsity counterpart: a 3-0 decision for Sacred Heart.

Kevin is coached by Beena Koshy; Jeffrey is coached by Diane Steiker.

The Public Forum tournament featured fifty teams from more than five states, guaranteeing a quarterfinals bid to the Tournament of Champions as per the regulations guiding that event. Charles Li and Ben Tolkin of Newton South High School faced off against Mike Conte and Alex Frawley of Regis High School in the final round of this competitive division. The round was adjudicated by Erik Fogel, Guru Jotwani, Nahuel Telleria, Judge Panfil, and Joseph Gazzola. On a 3-2 decision — Fogel and Gazzola sat out — the title was awarded to Newton South. Congratulations to both teams!

Newton South is coached by Lisa Honeyman and Chris Palmer. Regis is coached by Eric Di Michele.

An editorial aside: congratulations to Matt Scarola, Chris Palmer, and Jim Menick for overseeing this year’s considerable expansion of this tournament. I want to note that a tremendous effort was put into providing a judging pool of the highest quality possible. I think I speak for many when I say that this effort was noted and appreciated.

Rumor has it Bronx Science VS, Bronx Science ST, and Bronx Science BE are 4-0 or 3-1, and that Bronx Science SS is 3-1. But these aren’t definite.

    First, some random results things:

-In the semis round between Matt Salant and Shadman, the decision was a 2-1 for Shadman (Huberlie, Berryhill, *Chernick)
-Matt doesn’t have the tab information on his computer, but when he gets it, he’ll post full results.

Second, CONGRATULATIONS to the Sacred Heart crew and Shadman on winning a difficult tournament (7/8 people in quarters had a bid, and the other qualled last year). Columbia was a lot of fun–thanks to Matt, Caitlin, Palmer, and Menick for helping run a fantastic tournament.

Yea congrats to everyone, especially bronx and nisky for hegemonizing in outrounds, and isaac and jason for their awesomeness.

This was my first year at the tournament, and I wasn’t sure at first what to expect given what I had heard about it in previous years, but it turned out to be really enjoyable. The judging was as excellent as the competition was intense, and I really look forward to returning next year.

Thanks to Matt, Caitlin, Ali, Chris, Mr. Menick (I still can’t say “Jim” after all these years), and the rest of the Columbia crew for doing a fantastic job. The addition of a 6th prelim, judge strikes, and judge paradigms helped make this one of the most enjoyable and well-run tournaments I’ve been to in a long time.

Good tournament. I think the use of flex prep was a good touch, although I feel like if a school is going to actively try to undermine the strike-paradigm process, kids should be able to strike every judge from that school, since those judges are essentially claiming that they’re exactly the same.

Contrary to what the field report said, I didn’t actually compete this past weekend. Nevertheless, congrats to Miranda, Hassin, Vineet and Arielle. Props also to Jason and Seth, both of whom will no doubt qual soon, and to Isaac and Shadman for winning a lot, again.

this was a great tourney. flex prep, paradigms, nearby good food, strikes, and like a million hours between rounds makes for greatness.

i hope next years’ is just as good!

Let me also say kudos to Matt Scarola, Ali Huberlie, Caitlin Halpern and the rest of the tab crew for running a very godo tournament, handling judging well, etc.

From a judging perspective and the point of view of helping students at Columbia, I was quite impressed and def saw the caliber of competition /judging to surpass many tournaments I’ve been to in a while.

Columbia was far more competitive and better judged than the “stereotypical northeast bid tournament” label one would assume.

If I had a vote on the toc committee I’d move up columbia to semis, but that’s just me. =)

I also want to give a shout out to some great debates I saw this weekend esp to Issac and Gabe who both did a great job! Congrats!

I want to repeat here what I noted above:

On behalf of the Bronx Science team, I want to thank Matt Scarola, Chris Palmer, and Jim Menick for overseeing this year’s considerable expansion of this tournament.

This was a tremendous (and tremendously exciting, competitive, and well-run) tournament this weekend in the city. I spoke to my debaters before nearly every round, and they were praising the tournament profusely throughout.

Matt and by Caitlin Halpern worked very hard to assemble a judging pool of the highest quality possible. I think I speak for a great many people when I say that this effort was noted and appreciated.
