California Round Robin Announced
OAKLAND, Cali. — Lexy Green has announced the policy debate teams competing in this year’s California Round Robin, which will be held in February immediately prior to the California Invitational at the University of California, Berkeley. The round robin is unique in that the final round of the competition is always a public debate evaluated by a panel of experts on the national policy topic.

FINAL ROUND CRITICS
Sir Richard Feachem.Since 1999, Richard Feachem has been Professor of Global Health at both the University of California, San Francisco and the University of California, Berkeley and the founding director of the Institute for Global Health. From 2002 to 2007, Sir Richard served as founding Executive Director of the UN Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. During this time, the Global Fund became the world’s largest health financing institution for developing countries, with assets of over US $10.5 billion, supporting 450 programs in 136 countries. It was announced in December that The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will give $5 million to the University of California, San Francisco, to start an “action tank,” led by Sir Richard. This organization, the Global Health Group will first focus on malaria eradication and an enhanced role for the private sector in strengthening health systems in developing countries. Sir Richard was knighted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2007.
Nancy Padian. University of California, San Francisco Obstetrics & Gynecology Professor Nancy Padian is Executive Director of Women’s Global Health Imperative and Director of International Programs for the AIDS Research Institute. Dr. Padian coordinates all the research activities of UCSF Global Health Sciences. Her own research focuses on the efficacy of physical and barrier contraceptives that might decrease susceptibility to HIV and other STDs. She has two projects evaluating the acceptability and effectiveness of existing over-the-counter barrier methods, one in Northern California and one in. She will also be testing new microbicides in Zimbabwe as part of the HIVNET international prevention network. She holds an MPH and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley.
Theogene Rudasingwa. Theogene Rudasingwa is Vice President, Global Affairs and Global Projects Specialist for Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation. In this role, Dr. Rudasingwa is responsible for establishing and developing Pangaea’s global partnerships with organizations engaged in large scale HIV/AIDS treatment delivery. Dr. Rudasingwa graduated from the School of Medicine at Makerere University in Kampala Uganda in 1990. He was a leader in the Rwandese Patriotic Front from 1990 to 1996, working to stop the genocide and save lives and then playing a key role in the establishment of the new government. From 1996 to 1999, he was the first Ambassador to the United States in post-genocide Rwanda, helping to shape the country’s new relationship with the U.S. Dr. Rudasingwa was Chief of Staff for the Office of the Vice President of Rwanda in 1999, before becoming Chief of Staff to the Office of the President of Rwanda from 2000 to 2004.
