Tess McNulty Wins New York PDAA Title

Tess McNulty and Jane Kessner
PARSIPPANY, N.J. — It was a round that you wouldn’t see in the NCAA, but that you could see in the PDAA: the Juliard School facing off against the University of Maryland in a championship round. Really. The PDAA December Madness, part of the Pinnacle Winter Seminar in New York, came to a close late Sunday afternoon. Forty-eight debaters — representing the colleges of their choice — vied for the PDAA Championship and — in a separate breakout — the “Frosh-Soph NIT” title. Congratulations, then, are in order for Millburn High School’s Tess McNulty (Juliard) and Walt Whitman High School’s Jane Kessner (Maryland) for making it through the bracket to the final round. The round was adjudicated by Mira Chernick, Petey Gil-Montllor, Ali Huberlie, Sean Mumper, and Matt Scarola. On a 5-0 decision, Juliard defeated Maryland to take the PDAA.
Congratulations are also in order for Walt Whitman High School’s Stefanie Rohde and Niskayuna High School’s Salman Syed for advancing to finals of the NIT Breakout! Stefanie represented GW; Salman represented RPI. Ali Huberlie, Liz Mullins, and Hannah Rothman adjudicated. GW defeated RPI on a 3-0. (Coaching credits, a photo of the NIT finalists, and extended results for both the PDAA and the NIT Breakout follow.)
Tess is coached by Brian Raymond. Jane and Stefanie are coached by Anjan Choudhury, Tanya Choudhury, and Elyse Lyons. Salman is coached by Loralynne Krobetzky and Mike Welch.

It’s an acrylic award, mounted on a marble base, with a plated sphere connected to the acrylic. The awards — quite handsome ones — were donated by Sheila McKay.

You can tell this was a debater “NCAA” tournament by the abundance of non-competitive basketball teams chosen.
