Ben Holguin is Blake Champion

posted by Jon Cruz on December 15th, 2007

Christian Keil and Ben Holguin

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The first national tournament to feature the January-February resolution has come to a close, bringing together two Minnesotans to debate for one of the most coveted titles in Minnesota. Edina High School’s Ben Holguin and Lakeville South High School’s Christian Keil emerged from a field of over 150 competitors drawn from across America to debate the final round. A panel of Stephen Babb, Tommy Clancy, and Petey Gil-Montllor voted unanimously to award the title to Ben. Congratulations to both debaters! (Coaching credits follow, along with partial extended results. Help me fill in the breakdowns of decisions and the octafinals pairings!)

Ben is coached by Jessica Bailey and Jake Gelfand; Christian is coached by Andy Charrier and Liz Vieira.

And Props to the Hyatt from those of us who were told our rooms were not being rented for overnight stay in the early hours this morning. It at least gave myself, some of the Blake Debaters spending the night, JuJu, and Dan Jennis something to laugh at.

    SPLINTER!!

It’s worth pointing out that the new topic seems to work out pretty well. there’s a lot of good ground to play with, and i heard some pretty cool arguments. also, to address a concern that some people have had, it doesn’t seem overly neg biased. after what i heard was something like a 70-30 split in rd. 1, it evened out a lot

Matt Hershey wins the Blake Round Robin on a 3-0 decision against David McNeil.

He also didn’t drop a ballot the entire time.

    Way to go, bro.

Actually, Matt beat me on a 3-0 in semis, not finals. Matt did win the round robin after defeating Ben Holguin on a 4-1 in finals (4 “real” judges and 9 students who made up 1 judge, with the student vote going 5-4 for Matt on the negative).

Be warned, Matt Hershey will not only stomp the colons of the competition, but the colons of distant relatives of the human race such as lagomorphs.

Thanks to Mr. Doherty for reminding me.

Congrats to Matt on the RR – dropping only 1 ballot out of 16 over the course of the round robin is very impressive indeed.

Also congrats to Alan on breaking and getting to semis.

for those who attended and especially those who competed and judged:

What were some effective strategies on the new resolution?

What type of frameworks do people seem to be running?

Was there an abundance of off-case arguments on this resolution?

    Thanks
