Jake Nebel Wins the Glenbrooks

Ken Hershey and Jake Nebel
NORTHBROOK, Ill. — The Glenbrooks, the nation’s largest all-events forensics tournament held at a high school in the United States, featured pools of nearly two hundred debaters in the varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate division and ninety in the J.V. division. The very best competitors from schools across the country competed in seven intense preliminary rounds before the tournament broke the top thirty-two to the sextodecimofinals. On Monday afternoon, only two remained from the field of two hundred: Trinity Preparatory School’s Jake Nebel and Scarsdale High School’s Ken Hershey. In front of a packed audience, they debated for a panel of Ryan O’Hara, Ari Parker, and David Weeks. On a 2-1 decision — Parker dissented — Jake defeated Ken to claim the storied title.
Earlier in the day, the junior varsity final round concluded, in which Walt Whitman High School’s Ben Lewis defeated New Trier High School’s Chris Conway. Congratulations to the finalists! (Coaching credits and extended results follow. Special thanks to Chris Castillo for his invaluable assistance in reporting from the tournament this weekend!)
Jake is coached by Petey Gil-Montllor and Darcy Butrimas; Ken is coached by Joe Vaughan, Chetan Hertzig, Patrick Diehl, and Matt Aks. Ben is coached by Anjan Choudhury, Tanya Choudhury, and Elyse Lyons; Chris is coached by Linda Oddo and Liz Scoggin.

By the way, our plane was so severely delayed that we couldn’t meet our connection (thanks for the misinformation, Continental!), and so we commissioned a bus to drive us from Cleveland to Chicago. Except that it was basically a stretch limo bus.
Cue “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey to be inspired.

Lastly, congrats to Shadman, Theis, Wade, and especially Jake, who all debated really well in our rounds. The rounds I had this weekend were some of the best I’ve ever had.

Thanks for all of the support this weekend, from the rest of the Whitman team and the debate community at large.
Congrats to Rachel on getting 1st speaker by a pretty significant margin and smacking opponents around to get to Quarters.
And a special thanks to Anjan, who worked tirelessly for the entire tournament to not only help me, but also support five other LDers, a congress finalist, and a pf team that is now fully qualled. You’ve got to get some sleep.
I would worry about the JV curse, but it looks like Ravi and Ken have already proved it wrong pretty thoroughly.
