Alex Williams, Gabe Schonfeld Declared Bump Co-Champions

Alex Williams and Gabe Schonfeld
MONTROSE, N.Y. — Some blame it on a lack of a clear wireless signal in Montrose; personally, I think Jim Menick may have installed a VBD Verizon card dampener system right next to the Bumpidome. But whatever your theory, I was unable to post the results of this weekend’s Malcolm A. Bump Memorial Tournament at Hendrick Hudson High School until just now. The competitive tournament drew top competition from across the Northeast and Florida as debaters competed for one of the region’s most storied titles. As per the tournament’s tradition, the last two debaters left standing were declared co-champions. Congratulations, then, are in order for Niskayuna High School’s Alex Williams and Lexington High School’s Gabe Schonfeld! Congratulations are also in order for the finalists in the tournament’s large, inaugural novice division. A final round was held, and it featured Regis High School’s Chris Neylan and the Bronx High School of Science’s Carolyn Clendenin. On a 5-4 decision, Chris defeated Carolyn to claim the title. (Coaching credits and a picture of the novice finalists follow; partial varsity and novice results are also available.)
Alex is coached by Loralynne Krobetzky and Mike Welch; Gabe is coached by Maggie Berthiaume.

Chris Neylan and Carolyn Clendenin
Chris is coached by Eric Di Michele; Carolyn is coached by Jon Cruz.

Can someone post quarters on?
I know in one octos bid round, Nisky SoS def. Walt Whitman JK on a 2-1 (Rollens, Kwik, Kt Menick*).
On a sappy coaching aside, I want to congratulate my 3 Whitman sophomores Jane, Caroline, and Perry for clearing once again. And a special note to Jane, who has been to 3 tournaments this year . . . and has been in 3 bid rounds . . . as a sophomore. (Jane, I know it is frustrating to keep losing 2-1 bid rounds but your time will come — keep your head up kid!). When you get to work with students like these three, you cannot help but feel great to be a debate coach.

I love bump, on every possible level
Near ridiculous ups to:
Alan Tong, Matt Dunay, Matt Hershey, and Alex Bores on making me sweat out like…4 15 minute long decisions in a row. great rounds, great debaters, any one of them could easily have gone the other way (As far as decisions go, they were all 2-1’s except for semis which was a 5-0 (does not reflect how close the round was))
Alex Williams for calling the final round once breaks came out, and for co-championhood
everyone else (so many names) who bid- you guys are great. This tournament was MONEY for the strugglers. Akshay, sohail, alex W, lets keep it up.
The entire state of new jersey- For being a struggle factory. You guys are all fantastic debaters, and that’s gonna come out strong.
Hug Buddy- for being a struggle factory, and staying strong
The lexington ARMY-these kids were the second man, dominating all other teams in terms outround attendance. I love this team

Mad props to Gabe. He’s sooooo deserving of the bid. Also, congrats to The Impact for the bid round (reppin’ the 9-1-7 as well as the Trifecta). Gratz to o captain my captain, Sam Sanders, for the bid round as well. I’m still going to get the first Byram Hills bid :P. Thanks to Daks and Akshay for providing me with (if nothing else) an incredibly entertaining 45 minutes (it was a most amusing octafinal round) and congrats to Daks on the bid round and Akshay on the bid. What else… oh yeah, congrats to Bobby on breaking and Dunay on making it to the bid round. You’ll get that second bid soon- don’t worry. Nice job to Justich for breaking. I can’t wait until we hit again. Preferably in a final where everybody is watching (you’re required to run a VIC and I’m required to run some form of Wittgenstein/Nietzsche combination that doesn’t really make any sense). Finally, nice job Marc on breaking and putting me in my place. I need to be humbled every once in awhile-keeps my ego in check :D.

Special shout out to Carolyn (17-2 so far — nice job!), Bobby, Emanuel, Matt, Melanie, Paul, and Saboor for reppin’ Bronx Science this weekend. I am really proud of you.
Congratulations to Alex and Gabe, and to semifinalists Alex and Isaac on a great weekend. And yay to Team Scarsdale!
Most of all, and I know speak on behalf of Bronx Science, I want to thank Jim Menick and the Hendrick Hudson crew for running a spectacularly efficient and enjoyable tournament. This tournament is really one of the gems of the season and I hope even more people will consider adding it to their schedules next season.
Thank you to Menick for the bag of goodies. Everyone seemed appreciative of the very appropriate Disney princess booklet, but I for one like my “What Would Menick Do?” t-shirt. I love the crappy prizes.

Thanks for the heads up about the semis panel. For the sake of full disclosure, as I was leaving, I realized there was no semis posting, and Menick and I resolved to make up panels for the VBD post until it was corrected. :o)

for those interested. i have created a TOC scoreboard similar to the one of ‘05-’06. it includes every tournament (i believe) to date, who picked up bids, as well as an area denoting who has 2+bids or are autoqualled from last year. while some think that ‘bid-counting’ is a bad nuance of the activity, i think it’s safe to say that competitiveness is just as valuabe as education when it comes to debate, and this acts as a reference tool for those who are wondering about the status of others around the country.
