Ben Holguin Wins the MinneApple

Todd Liipfert and Ben Holguin
APPLE VALLEY, Minn. — After two days of intense, efficient, single-flighted competition — in which over one hundred and fifty competitors debated seven preliminary rounds prior to the double-octafinal round — two debaters emerged victorious to face in the final round of the twenty-second annual MinneApple at Apple Valley High School. Edina High School’s Ben Holguin’s faced off against Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School’s Todd Liipfert in front of a panel of Tim Hogan, Michael Arton, Anjan Choudhury, Joe Vaughan, and Chetan Hertzig. The panel unanimously voted for Ben. Congratulations to both debaters! (Coaching credits follow with extended results.)
Ben is coached by Jessica Bailey and Jake Gelfand. Todd is coached by Jerry Crist and Gary Johnson.

Of course, congrats to everyone, but esp. congrats to Em and Ellen. Em, you got a bid as a sophomore and didn’t even need nuclear war! And Ellen, you were long overdue for this because you have the talent to match your work ethic. It’s really good to see great things happen to great people. I am so proud of you both!

I would like to take this time to Thank Pam Wycoff, Cherian Koshy, and all the Apple Valley Debate students and parents. The Minnesota Nice was certainly in place. What a great experience we had in our first trip to the Minneapple. We hope to return. Outstanding job my friends!

akshar rambachan is a machine. 7-0 in prelims and an octas appearance with absolutely zero LD experience before this tournament.
Posted from: 75.73.208.213
November 4th, 2007 21:08
To be fair, Akshar had debated at least somewhat on the MN local circuit before this tournament, but just the same Wade is totally right… Akshar took this tournament by storm. Congrats to him on being 7-0 and bidding.
Posted from: 128.101.49.47
November 4th, 2007 21:31
To be fairer: this is NOT a joke. Akshar is the shit. In his doubles round Paul Schiano, Jason Fernandez, and Sam Duby took his source cites claiming it was the best AC/evidence they’ve seen in over a year. Not only that he actually cuts his cards. Yes, actually uses scissors, glues them to note cards, and has a stack of them on his desk waiting to be read (none of this expando crap). If that isn’t enough for you he flows horizontally and beat some of the most technical debaters at this tournament in front of legitimate judges.
If you’re reading this Akshar - please go to Blake so you can qual for the ToC.

I received a text from the tournament from Chris Castillo about an incredibly talented young man reppin’ the horizontal flow — Chris and I definitely employed yellow pads throughout high school — and I’m glad to see that Akshar continues a tradition of excellence from Eastview. I’ve been very impressed by Eastview debaters I’ve judged before. Congratulations on going 7-0 and receiving a bid to the TOC!

Yeah I really hope Akshar comes to Blake too… he definitely deserves to be at TOC. I just hope he isn’t too put off by his loss to Ben in octas to not go to any more bid tournaments - word is he was extremely upset and said rounds like that are “the reason Eastview doesn’t do LD.” I think it would be a huge loss for the community if Akshar disappears from the national circuit debate scene.

thanks for all the kind words
First, congrats to ben for a well-fought, deserved victory.
David, I would love to come to Blake. Of course, I was frustrated about the outcome of the round- it is only natural. I was taken aback by the vastly unique and frankly confusing theory. However, we must remember it was a brilliant move on Ben’s part and for that he deserves congrats. I personally am not a fan of theory in the sense that it can really make debate unfair. The point of a resolution is to limit the debate and make preparation possible. When a million decent sounding theories are possible, such preparation is nullified and the purpose of context with the resolution is lost. Once again, smart move by Ben. In the two prior times we debated, it was always unique, but resolutional and I had enjoyed that.
I will see you all soon
Akshar

Thank you to everyone for attending and for the great compliments. It should be noted that the double octos panels were originally five judges that competitors were able to strike from. Please let us know your feedback on that idea.
The crab apple award went to Wayzata’s Francesca Parente, who wasn’t present for awards so I will hand her her award at Highland Park next weekend.
Packets are posted on the MDTA website (www.mdta.org). It’s also important to congratulate the JV and Novice champions and finalists. In JV, Apple Valley’s Kirstie Kimball defeated Sacred Heart’s Meling May on a 3-2 decision in a pride driven round. Shoshana Gordan Ginsburg, Emily Pechacek, and Chris Bentley were in the majority. Patrick Diehl and Elyse Lyons dissented. In Novice, Valley’s Nimah Ahmed defeated Roseville’s Meera Sury.
Also, the MinneApple awards sweepstakes awards for teams that compete in all three divisions. The sweepstakes points were very close during awards and depended on the outcome of varsity elimination rounds. This year, the West Des Moines Valley team took home the championship. This is the fifth time coach David McGinnis has won the sweepstakes at Apple Valley with three different schools. Congratulations to Valley and to Dave! Edina took second with Ben’s win in finals and Lakeville South rounded out the top three.
This year’s Golden Apple award winner was Mr. Doug Springer of New Trier Township HS. The Distinguished Alumnus Award was presented to Peter Nikolai from St. Paul Central HS.
Watch for the full story on the NFL website (www.nflonline.org) coming this week!

Of course, after I hit submit, I realized that I forgot about Public Forum. Public Forum was held at the Apple Valley tournament for the first time this year. The inaugural competition was hosted on Saturday with five rounds of competition. The Blake School’s Matt Aizpuru & Julia Hawkins bested the field by remaining the only undefeated team and capturing the championship trophy. Okoboji High School, Iowa’s Katelyn Warburton & Alyssa Geinitz were the second place finishers with only one loss. Blake is coached by Leslie Robinett and Okoboji is coached by Greg Stevens.
Congratulations again!

Akshar, of course it is natural to be frustrated about the outcome of difficult and important rounds when they don’t go the way one hopes they will - I meant no offense by my previous comment, and I’m glad to hear you’ll be attending Blake.

Long as I’m here - congrats to the Hopkins team on an excellent weekend - particularly Kristen Allison for making her first bid round, and Conor Doherty for making his 3rd bid round in 3 bid tournaments this season.
