Chris Theis Wins the Heart of Texas

David Donatti and Chris Theis
DALLAS, Tex. — The St. Mark’s Heart of Texas Invitational has come to a close. One hundred competitors vied over three days for one of debate’s most storied titles and, in the end, two debaters were left standing. Apple Valley High School’s Chris Theis faced off against Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School’s David Donatti in front of a panel of Geoff Caffo, Ajay Ketkar, and Kris Wright. On a 2-1 decision — Ketkar sat out — Chris defeated David to claim Apple Valley’s second St. Mark’s title. (Coaching credits and extended results follow. I am still compiling some of the panels.)
Chris is coached by Pam Cady Wycoff, Cherian Koshy, and Tim Hogan. David is coached by Jerry Crist and Gary Johnson.

Basketball season approaches on swift feet, like i hope and pray it will. simultaneously, st marx occurs, the hungry masses converging on the poor texas sub-urb (fun fact: OWEN WILSON WENT TO ST MARX), hoping to win some hardware. personally, i hold nothing against the tournament for refusing me entry (warranted due to yours truly’s problem with deadlines), and in fact, the raw coke (turns into coal, not a deviated septum) created by my loss of st marx will serve to power a locomotive of desire straight into the heart of the debate community. THIS IS NOT A PREDICTION, IT IS ONTOLOGICAL FACT.
Pre-season thoughts for no records, Dwight “Dwiggy” Howard? Has a nice ring to it, like something a bare-foot child born in the spastic throws of San Fransisco might consider its own. Conflicting enough to be memorable/ironically amusing, and we all know irony solves for the im(pending) post(data) global know-lo-caust. Debate requires a color commentator so to speak, someone to fill the voids between academic thought and shit-talk @ locations undisclosed. Perhaps one among the ranks of the disgruntled can fill that void, become famous through their wit and skill and brutal dissection of what makes us all tick. Until the chosen one fills that void as if to expand like the consciousness of Timothy Leary made of play-doh, i will strive to square peg-round hole this shit. debate gonzo journalism is born, a strident fuck you to our predecessors (HST, KK, TW?, RF, JK, WB, AG, etc) while at the same time retaining that lovable smile and lack of integrity. what better way to report than as someone with a stake in the game? someone who feels the gnawing hunger of competition from within?
i heard tell that one jake gelfand (oh he of the vibe fame, eminently good work in my opinion, hilarious and continuously more than worthy of my time) was a reporter of sorts in a past life, drawing on the collectively amusing in order to deliver THE TRUTH to the masses. unfortunately, i am unaware of any current attempts to revive said writings in the current futurepast. in lieu of such circumstances, skip that kanye west track kiddies, El Dr. is screeching into town, whirlwind of excess and consumption (albertson’s and fred meyer at 2 in the morning, whole roast chickens and expandos full of love, mt dew GAME FUEL, candy, cookies, reams of white paper, blood on my white shirt, tie askew, spewing self-hate and epithets at the sky), bringing you the finest in the tournaments i attend, up to date and inaccurate reportage not fit for broadcast. i/we fully intend on posting up hearsay, counter-fact, narrative, and perhaps occasional rants on anything/everything i can scrounge up at a tournament. be there or be square.
feel free to submit ideas for tournaments i do not attend, but first get yerself in the frame of mind by watching this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79×7_iOaDXg

I want to send a major congratulations to the Hershey brothers, especially to Matt on his first career bid. In addition to the standard stuff – you guys have worked so hard, you guys totally deserve it, etc. – I want to add that you guys are just awesome. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know both of you over the past few years- you were great to travel with during my senior year, you both have great senses of humor, and I can’t emphasize enough how much I admire your relationship as brothers.
Regardless of what happens tomorrow, it’s been a breakout performance for both of you and I’m very happy and proud. Good luck tmrw.

Damn i never knew i was a tool, but ok.
and good variation of the name….never heard someone call me softcock before…i understand the genius of it becuase u switch the syllables and then change roft to SOFT, as in not hard, which would be a woody…i get it.
hope this didnt sound too testy…HA get it

this is true..if u just add a word to the end like calling me “cocktable” is a good one, or just any random word to the end is satisfactory….OR u could do some reference to the phallus, for instance u could just call me cockdick as that seems to be pretty funny as well. OR just start refering to me only by name the phallus…OR u call me cockroach but people have not done that for years now.
So basically my last names spawns creativity. so if brilliance strikes u with another linguistic gift please be sure to tell me becuase i feel i have heard all of them.
PS. screw u john :)

i don’t get why, despite cockroft’s awesome achievements this year, people have to hate. like, whoever the guy is calling him a tool, obviously a. doesn’t know cockroft, and b. is hating just to hate. he had an awesome run at this tournament, is a nice kid, and doesn’t deserve people being a dick to him.

to post 119 & 123-I really think soft-cock is much more clever than any of the ones you previously mentioned, cockroach would be funny if we were all in 5th grade, but of those mentioned, I for one think softcock is the funniest variation on your last name

ive heard softcock in the fifth grade too..just as kids learned that cock, while also meaning chicken means penis (ya who wouldve thunk it). So softcock is not a stroke of genius…do u get it stroke HA…God, penis humor is so damn original and funny
and i dont think u can really make a determination on which variation is funnier becuase i GAURUNTEE that u have heard every single one. If u hav actually sat down and came up with everyone u can think of, and then made a determination that, yes, SOFTCOCK is the funniest, then power to you….But u couldnt possibly have done this becuase there are literally hundreds of names.
if such humor continues to persist, i think i might have to just change my last name to Penis…then maybe the joke will end becuase its just too damn obvious. and if u do make fun of the name, ur not original, uve just joined one of the many people to have the idea float in there brain that cock does mean penia and ur poetic mind manifested a penis variation of somethin and then laughed like a fifth grader when the teacher said penis as a scientific term.
But if u are to make fun of it, be original or something. If it helps, the origion on of my last name makes it mean “chicken farmer.” If penis jokes continue to persist then ur not tryin hard enough (o get it, like dicks can be hard too). truely new ones will actually make me kinda happy becuase itll give me somethin to do, in coming up with comebacks or just being angry.
And if when i was saying “coming” made u giggle in correlation with me saying things about the phallus then u did get it.
and to post 132: that was pretty ironic and ill give it to u

I WON THE BELT. HAVE I EARNED THE RIGHT TO TALK?
you’re an asshole. plain and simple. i hate to resort to ad hominems, but A. its true and B. you probably won’t understand a reasoned complaint against your conduct. anyway, here it is:
this is exactly the sort of behavior that i feel VBD and the activity should try to fight. debate is a social activity, and we should encourage everyone to speak and share their viewpoint, even if it is just a silly joke on a message board. there is a reason this activity is declining in participation, and if it takes message boards to solve it, so be it. does that mean that every kid who wished their friend or teammate good luck doesn’t count either unless they’ve won something too? sean wynn is funny, and if you don’t think so, you’re welcome to that opinion, but you don’t have to be an asshole about it.
people who are good at the activity don’t speak, and i think that’s a good point.but i don’t think its a good thing. perhaps we are all too mired in the cult of personality to realize that debate is about more than just winning, its about a social community and academic experience that treats every high schooler with a dream and determination as an equal. everyone should speak. i wish we were all as vocal as sean wynn. he’s a great friend, a great influence on the activity, and god forbid someone actually develop personality or panache in debate. that would be like, the worst thing ever. almost as bad as if we let minorities in, right?

there’s a difference between panache and being a jerk. not saying sean wynn is being a jerk, but calling people tools and underhandedly calling people bad at the activity is distinctly different from either a. banter or b. constructive criticism. the people with their names at the top of this thread did really well this past weekend and deserve to have their accomplishments applauded, not marred by those who like to name-call, or bash in general. i think that’s a fair claim.

YAH WOO DEBATE YEAH
never saw this crockroft guy but props for running nietzsche. ld has some serious philosophical issues to deal with. i mean we could “maintain the integrity” of the activity by ignoring them but i think moral skepticism is a good thing to know how to respond to - with something other than the BUT GENOCIDE IS IMMORAL response. or theory. theory is being used to exclude all sorts of good arguments. i dont mean to say that i think multiple short a prioris are good for debate (because i dont) but the idea that the neg has to defend a normative statement (in this case that we ought to use the death penalty) is a pretty arbitrary burden to hand out. the idea that it is morally reprehensible to use the death penalty is also an assumption in the resolution. so when people are like OH DEAR attacking assumptions is bad - nietzsche is illegit - i think that its important to notice that the other option - to say that the death penalty is moral - is also just attacking an assumption in the statement. attacking multiple assumptions may be bad for theoretical reasons but JUST attacking the assumption that morality has some objective content does not seem unfair at all - just unconventional perhaps.

Can someone describe how the Nietzsche position was run that S Hess refers to?
Also, what were the positions in semis? It seems like if we are to the point in LD where we are kicking counterplans in the NR that ae turned and running lots of K’s etc, perhaps its to talk more about the specifics of arguments in these big debates. Anyone game?
Just my thoughts.

The case basically stated that the truth of the resolution cannot be evaluated because theres no ability to create conceptual truth, mostly centered around the inability to describe the true essence of things, which would be considered real truth…(in a nutshell)
Posted from: 71.82.3.64
October 24th, 2007 13:55
On the kicked counterplan - I believe what happened is that the NC reserved the right to clarify the status of the counterplan but the aff did not ask about it in CX. Had the aff asked, it is likely that the counterplan would have been clarified as being dispositional. The NR decided the counterplan was conditional so it was able to get out of turns by kicking the counterplan.

since my last post for some reason or another didnt appear:
congrats wade for rolling through prelims, chris for winning, moerner for speaking pretty, dfk on repping berroweeks, and cockroft for repping the Nietzsche. Sorry for seeming accusatory at the tourn, and congrats on the breakout(altho i think it’s funny that finals of one of the year’s hardest semis bids isnt considered breaking out).
btw, if you dont wanta have to debate the Nietzsche K, then dont make assumptions that make your ac link. it’s not that hard. i promise. (note that the unjust=deficient in justice is not a very good way to do this)

also, travis smith (as far as i know) is from new orleans jesuit, which has a hell of a lot of kids in it. Just because some kid posts something asinine from the N.O. jesuit ip doesnt give you liscense to hate on a good guy. btw the “oh snap i gotcha! i got your ip harharhar” thing makes you look like a huge tool.
