Joan Gass Wins Big Bronx XXXVII

posted by Jon Cruz on October 14th, 2007

Joan Gass and Jake Nebel

THE BRONX, N.Y. — The thirty-seventh annual New York City Invitational began with over one hundred and thirty competitors representing forty-nine schools across fifteen states. After seven preliminary rounds, the top thirty-two debaters faced off in the sextodecimofinals; after battling through the remaining elimination rounds on Sunday, the initial field was reduced to two. Congratulations to the Hockaday School’s Joan Gass and Trinity Preparatory School’s Jake Nebel for advancing to the final round! Jed Glickstein, Chetan Hertzig, Amanda Liverzani, Sarah Smith, and Jude Volek adjudicated. On a 3-2 decision — Volek, Hertzig, and Smith made up the majority, while Glickstein and Liverzani dissented — Joan defeated Jake to win the tournament’s title. Joan will take home the Richard B. Sodikow Award, a towering perpetual trophy carrying the engraved names of every previous champion of the tournament. (Coaching credits and extended results follow.)

Joan is coached by Stacy Thomas, Tom Evnen, and Andy Werner. Jake is coached by Petey Gil-Montllor and Darcy Butrimas.

congrats to usha, cody, alex, ellen, paul, david, akshay, and tess, who has had an unbelievable start to her debate season (undefeated in prelims and 2nd seed at a tourney with some nasty competition)! congrats are also due to alan, who had a really tough draw after being 4-0, as well as to harry, who was half a speaker point away from breaking.

i’d like to second marc by saying thanks to Jon and nice job on running such an awesome tournament. I had a lot of fun, the competition was intense, and the food was an improvement from last year, although I was dissapointed in the lack of the promised hot shit:(

This tournament was awesome. As people have already said, the pool was intense, the judges were great, and the scheduling ran smoothly.

I don’t know if they’re looking to fill in missing information, but my octas result was:

I’ve been to this tournament for the last 3 years, and I continue to maintain that it offers the strongest competition in the NE, and frankly anywhere. Yet again, just looking at the outrounds gives you a sense of how intense everything was. And, again, look above at how fantastic the judging is.

But most importantly, thank you to Jon and to the Bronx Family for showing us all wonderful hospitality (esp. Arielle and Mr. Kellman who went out of their way to give me a ride when I really needed one!).

On a personal note, I just want to thank all five of my Whitman students at this tournaments for being so amazing and hard working. Marco and Emily, yall came very close, showed a lot of pride in round 7, and did an awesome job helping your teammates. David and Ellen, you did awesome getting to octos with super hard draws and did yourself proud. And Jane — what can I say - 2 tournaments your sophomore year, and 2 bid rounds - amazing.

This is the kind of weekend that reminds me why it is great to be a debate coach.

There are a lot of people to congratulate.

Bores and Jane on making it quarters.

Thank you Jon, Joe, Jim, and all the Bronx parents, debaters, and administration who made this tournament one of the best experiences our team has had. There are a LOT of reasons why Palo Alto chose to fly all the way across the country to this tournament on this weekend and we are *so* thankful that we did.

The contestant and judging pools were near the best we’ve experienced anywhere and the tournament administration (from the food to the open tab to the housing to the transportation options) was fantastic. Going to the Big Bronx is now a Palo Alto High School tradition.

I think its pretty clear that Bronx is one of the best tournaments out there and def one of the hardest semis bids of all time. The judging was great at both the tournament and the round robin. The field was a amazing at both as well. The results posted about the round robin are correct Jake was (I’m pretty sure the third of all time) top speaker at both the tournament and the round robin. Ravi (neg) def David (aff) on a 3-2 decision with the student vote (7-2), Tarsney and Castillo making up the majority and Clancy and Baldwin on bottom.

First, congrats to Joan on a great run, it was a really fun final round, and a worthy rematch of the VBI demo round.

Second, I’d like to thank Jon and the Bronx Science team for an extremely well-run tournament; it’s definitely the best of the Northeast in my opinion. I’d really recommend it to anyone next year who wants solid judging and competition, and the Round Robin is awesome. Bottom line: GO2BRONX.

Also, congrats to fellow confederate Ken Hershey for getting to quarters (although at Ravi’s expense), Joe Vaughan for breaking five debaters, JZhou for getting the bid and second speaker, Tess for going undefeated in prelims, Patrick Diehl for surviving his first Northeast tournament, and Sean Wynn for being the true winningest.
