Shadman Zaman Wins Yale Title

posted by Jon Cruz on September 29th, 2007

Shadman Zaman and Jake Nebel

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — After a weekend of debates among three hundred competitors across the varsity and J.V. Lincoln-Douglas debate fields at the Yale Invitational, two debaters met in the varsity final round and two debaters met in the J.V. final round. Sacred Heart High School’s Shadman Zaman faced off against Trinity Preparatory School’s Jake Nebel in the varsity match-up; Shadman took the title on a 7-0 decision. In the less-experienced division, Walt Whitman High School’s Ben Lewis defeated Hunter College High School’s Cara Eckholm on a 4-1 decision. Congratulations to all the finalists! (Coaching credits, a photograph of the J.V. finalists, and full varsity results follow. I am in the process of completing the J.V. results.)

Shadman is coached by Beena Koshy and Chetan Hertzig. Jake is coached by Petey Gil-Montllor and Darcy Butrimas.

Cara Eckholm and Ben Lewis

Ben is coached by Anjan Choudhury, Tanya Choudhury, and Elyse Lyons. Cara is coached by Noel Selegzi.

I’m curious. Does anyone know why they used double hi-lo to rank the speakers at this tournament. In JV there were only five rounds. That meant that after wins. In varsity four ballots were being dropped.

Should a JV who received these speakers points:
    30 29 28 26 25
really be ranked higher than someone who received:
    30 30 27 27 27

Average points would seem a coarse, but better way to rate judges than to take the median ballot.

Double hi-lo was ranked fourth (after wins, hi-lo and total speakers points) back when we had to order teams without computers and couldn’t calculate judge’s variance or strength of opposition. For a tournament to use it as a second tie-breaker when tabbing with a computer seems odd to me.

Of course, major congrats Ben, and thank you for all your hard work already this year — and the same to Nathaniel, Stef, and all the Whitmanites — yall are a wonderful team.

Also major kudos to Jake and Shadman. Jake, I’m not sure if I’ve ever voted for someone that many times within 24 hours. Shadman, if you keep winning tourneys, I may even accept the resemblance at some point….may…. anyhow, congrats!

I forgot to mention before that the YDA debaters were really helpful both before the tournament and throughout the weekend in terms of logistics and organization. Grant May, one of the tournament directors, was particularly awesome in helping us with the hotel over the summer, but the Rookie of the Year awards from what I could tell should be going to freshmen Pam Brown and Tommy Bodeau. They just seemed to know the answer to everything. (Except for when Pam actually insisted that Ariel was not a true Disney Princess. Needless to say, I set the record straight.) Future tournament directors, anyone?

Thanks to the Yale staff for another great tournament. Congrats to Jake on his consistently excellent performances, and to Shadman (not Shodman) on not sucking. :)

In case anyone’s interested, the semis and finals panels and decisions were as follows:

    SEMIS
    (5) Trinity Prep JN def. (1) Berkeley Carroll IB (Isaac Bloch)

5-0 (Anthony Berryhill, Anjan Choudhury, Jon Gordon, Chetan Hertzig, Adam Nelson)

    (6) Sacred Heart SZ def. (7) Trinity Prep RS (Ravi Sankar)

4-1 (Pam Brown*, Charlie Furman, Susan Morrow…I think this is right, but I’m not sure who the other judges were)

    FINALS

    (6) Sacred Heart SZ def. (5) Trinity Prep JN (Jake Nebel)

7-0 (Pam Brown, Rachel Foster, Dylan Gadek, Lauren Hallett, Matt Levinson, James Luccarelli, Shaina Wright)

Yale this year was probably the best it’s been in the three years i’ve been coming. I had excellent judging, especially in the rounds that really counted. The tourney ran remarkably efficiently. Major kudos to vaughan/menick/the tabroom in general for making this run so well.

side note: I realize that the move to a more compact venue was probably integral to the greater efficiency, but i’d really like to see the tournament brought back to campus next year, just because there’s more to do there.

I have to say this tourney was the best run I have been to in the four I have been attending. Much thanks to the tab staff - I know its exhausting but ya’ll did do a fantatic job.

I have to say I was incredibly impressed by a number of debates I saw in the 17 rounds I judged (I don’t think I have ever judged that many in a year - much less ONE tourney!) But special props to Issac Blok (SP?) and Jake Nebel (which I still don’t know how to pronounce!) who just kicked it into high gear this past weekend. I look forward to watching many more interesting/educational rounds from many other debaters this year!

Of course, I have to thank my financial responsibility too! Chetan you rock my world!

Congrats SHODMON! :) Love, your brown mama (the other one . . . of course!)
