Excerpt from swt K: “If one examines social realism, one is faced with a choice: either reject neodeconstructive theory or conclude that consensus comes from communication.”

Believe me, you DONT want to hit it. Everybody in top lab from NDF has it.

SOCIAL REALISM IMPLIES NO SUCH CHOICE. I CALL BULLSHIT.

    SCHLAG COUNTERS:

The myth of the subject-object metaphor is the projection of some place either in the subject or the structure of things, that is outside social inscription. But there is no point beyond social inscription, no law separate from politics, no knowledge separate from power, no reason separate from imagination, no things underneath more words, and no free subjects separate from social language. The myth of presence is the treachery of self-denial as we filter our perception and communication about social life through the official metaphors of validity.

    I YAM DISGUSTED.

‘Putting it differently, Derrida argues that, “a decision that didn’t go through the ordeal of the undecidable would not be a free decision,” it would only be the mechanistic application of a general rule. If a position is a pure mechanistic re-statement the re-stater denies oneself as a source of meaning independent of a general rule, which is structurally its own claim to universal iteration, but a human discursive act is inscribed with a position of meaning-creation. A person who did violence to himself – who denied himself as a source of meaning – would simply fall silent and be without positionality, but one who does function within discourse re-decides independently whether or not to apply a rule or repeat a claim. Independent perspective and meaning creation are the essences of individuality; personhood is positionality.’ Parrish continues:
‘The point, as Richard Beardsworth (one of Derrida’s most noteworthy commentators) explains, is that “a decision is always needed because there is no natural status to language, and that given this irreducibility of a decision, there are different kinds of decisions – those that recognize their legislative and executive force and those which hide it under some claim to naturality qua ‘theory’ or ‘objective science’.” In the first case the person recognizes and embraces its status as a creator of meaning, but in the second case (and as a preview of my discussion of Nietzsche) the person more closely resembles Nietzsche’s scientific ascetic who, while still a person and thus a creator, denies his nature and instead claims to discover fact. But in either event, [regardless] a person “is always…a legislator and policeman,” a creator and subsequent enforcer of its creations of meaning and value. So for Derrida, any discursive positioning is the outcome of an ordeal of the undecidable that is itself necessary because there is no objective, transparently discoverable truth. Rather, persons exist as the choosers, the creators, of discursive positionality (meaning; value).’

    hey tom/tim/christian/bernice/emily/nikita/matt/whoever i’m forgetting…

lend me the swt k for yale. i plan on going 6-0. that’ll make it a definite.

actually, no one will win the tournament. they’re just gonna have to give up, cause the only people left will be those with the swt k, and you cant vote against someone who even has it in their posession. no decisions will be made once you guys start hitting each other in outrounds.

But KJ I’m sorry, but it requires knowledge that only Chetan/Matt/Ali can give out. I have no idea how to explain how to run it, I just know how to. Also, the rhetoric is so dense there is no way you could run it by Yale. =)

I can attest to the greatness of the swt k. (corny flashback music)

It was this past summer at NDF. After debating for a year plus two weeks of camp, I thought I was ready to take on anything. I walked into the room, only to see Matt Thomas sitting across from me. I hadn’t realized I was facing him when I looked at the schematic. I didn’t say anything- he was too busy flipping through papers. The round started with me reading my aff (the way rounds generally start.) After I was done, I felt pretty good. However, Matt told the judge that he didn’t need cross-ex after I was done. I was extremely confused. What was going on? Matt stood up and took out a huge case- probably about 8 pages or so. All I could see was the cover page, which was scary as hell. He started reading incredibly fast, but I could understand everything he said. Suddenly, every limb in my body felt like it was on fire. I fell down to the ground, writhing in pain. I don’t remember clearly what happened after that. I awoke in a hospital room. To this day, I’m missing my right foot, a reminder of how powerful the swt k is. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

still not buying it. still disgusted.

    final volley:

This view of the state as an institutional monolith is fostered by the notion of sovereignty, which calls up the image of the monarch, presiding majestically over his kingdom. Sovereignty emphasizes the singularity of the state, its monopoly of authority, its unity of command and its capacity to speak with one voice. Thus, France wills, Iran demands, China intends, New Zealand promises and the Soviet Union insists. One all too easily conjures up the picture of a single-minded and purposeful state that decides exactly what it wants to achieve, adopts coherent policies intelligently adapted to its objectives, knows what it is doing, does what it intends and always has its act together. This view of the state is reinforced by political scientists’ emphasis upon the concept of policy and upon the thesis that governments derive policy from calculations of national interest. We thus take it for granted that states act internationally in accordance with rationality conceived and consciously constructed schemes of action, and we implicitly refuse to consider the possibility that alternatives to policy-directed behavior may have importance – alternatives such as random, reactive, instinctual, habitual and conformist behaviour. Our rationalistic assumption that states do what they have planned to do tends to inhibit the discovery that states sometimes do what they feel compelled to do, or what they have the opportunity to do, or what they have usually done, or what other states are doing, or whatever the line of least resistance would seem to suggest.
Academic preoccupation with the making of policy is accompanied by academic neglect of the execution of policy. We seem to assume that once the state has calculated its interest and contrived a policy to further that interest, the carrying out of policy is the virtually automatic result of the routine functioning of the bureaucratic mechanism of the state. I am inclined to call this the Genesis theory of public administration, taking as my text the passage: ‘And God said, Let there be light; and there was light’. I suspect that in the realm of government, policy execution rarely follows so promptly and inexorably from policy statement. Alternatively, one may dub it the Pooh-Bah/Ko-Ko theory, honouring those denizens of William S. Gilbert’s Japan who took the position that when the Mikado ordered that something be done it was as good as done and might as well be declared to have been done.

The reason Rebar’s responses are all preempted is because we have an AT: Rebar built in.

I can attest to the foot loss of Fisch. That round was epic. (Well, the NC was. The 1AR never happened)

In between bursts of predictable irony, the swt K indulges in rhetorically complex bursts of linguistic simplicity, punctuated by explorations of infinitely recursive ends based deontological anti-ethics.

    Judging: Lexington is bringing:
Evan Seitchik (First Year Out, debated 3 years for lexington, qualled to TOC as a senior, did not attend),
Garth Goldwater (First Year Out, 2 years of policy, one of LD, one of Public Forum for lexington. Won PFD TOC as a senior)

    Who else is getting brought?
