Jake Nebel is Greenhill Champion

David McNeil and Jake Nebel
ADDISON, Tex. — The Greenhill Fall Classic concluded with an epic clash between Trinity Preparatory School’s Jake Nebel and Edina High School’s David McNeil. The face-off took place in a room that was described at the outset as a place in which many epic debates had occured in the past. A panel of Chris Castillo, Anjan Choudhury, Wesley Craven, Jon Cruz, and Cherian Koshy adjudicated. The members of the panel voted unanimously and awarded this year’s Greenhill title to Jake. Congratulations to both debaters! (Full results and coaching credits are also available.)
Jake is coached by Petey Gil-Montllor and Darcy Butrimas. David is coached by Jessica Bailey and Jake Gelfand.

A lot of this is a matter of region. If you look at Berkeley quarters you will see a similar domination but by NSD.
It’s good to know Daniel Garber has succeeded where Eric Palmer and Stephen Hess have not.

I want to take this opportunity to more publicly congratulate Jake and David on an absolutely incredible final round.
I really wish that we had taped the round for all at home to watch. So often the rounds online are technical exercises; this round — certainly the best I have judged in recent memory — featured arguments that were incredibly substantive, thought-provoking, engaging, strategic, and, in the truest sense of the word, persuasive. It is rare that I am still thinking about what was said in a round the morning after a tournament. I know I will be thinking about it for some time to come.
Thanks, guys.
I also want to take this opportunity to thank Aaron Timmons and Jonathan Paul for being such great hosts this weekend. AT had a thousand things going on in the week before the tournament but took the time to personally assist me in resolving a small issue we had with our hotel reservations. That is just awesome. I have not been able to make it to Greenhill the past two years and this weekend reminded me why I had missed it so much. I am already looking forward to the next edition of the tournament.

I want to very much agree with what Jon said. This was an amazing tournament, and the entire Greenhill program deserves much thanks for really extraordinary effort and care.
Also, I want to really point out and thank Jake and the Trinity Prep crowd for writing what I believe was a really inspired affirmative case. I thought David did a really great job as well, and it produced an excellent final round. So often, the final round is often an afterthought at tournament. For me, this one was the highlight; I really felt like I learned something and saw really high quality debate.
And of course, major congratulations to Vivian (of Torrey Pines, though Vivian Ho gets mad props too!) on her first bid round of the year, and to Ellen on her first bid round of her career. I know there will be many to come for both of you. I’m really fortunate to work with such amazing and hard-working debaters.
