Today: Practice Round 1

LOS ANGELES, Cali. – Debaters engaged in their first practice round today. During VBI@LMU, there were three divisions, which I named after each of the films in the classic Star Wars Trilogy. Session II@UCLA is designed to be a smaller, more intimate institute and as such has two divisions for practice rounds. I probably could have continued the George Lucas theme — I was kind of feeling American Graffiti and More American Graffiti — but instead, we settled on names based on local geography.

You can download the pairings for the Sunset Division here.

You can download the pairings for the Westwood Division here.

Each division is double-flighted. When a debater has the flight off in her own division, she has downtime to prepare and to work. When one half of the camp has a double-flighted round, the other half of the camp proceeds to the Symposium on Debate Strategy. This series of lectures and discussions reinforces fundamental concepts while challenging students to evaluate their own current approaches to different aspects of debate. Today, Tommy Clancy led a symposium entitled “Advanced Affirming, or: ‘Recapturing the Myth.’”

Tonight, students will engage in the fourth session of modules.
