Lizzie Sivitz and Marc Wallach

LOS ANGELES, Cali. - Each day, I profile two upstanding young students at the Victory Briefs Institute. Tomorrow morning, our two-week students depart for home. Let’s catch up with two of them — Lizzie Sivitz of Bainbridge High School in Washington and Marc Wallach of the Collegiate School in New York — before they go and subject them to the VBD interview treatment. How did you first get involved in debate?

I observed my first debate tournament in fifth grade, accompanying my older sister. From the first round I watched, I was hooked.

What is your proudest achievement in debate thus far?

Winning one thousand tournaments in novice, breaking in varsity at Auburn and UPS, and third in state in expos.

What are your hobbies beyond debate?

Playing the ukulele, writing a column in the Bainbridge Review, hanging out with friends.

You are departing tomorrow. What were your main goals for VBI@LMU?

Progressing as a debater and becoming a winning machine.

What was your favorite thing about camp?

Reppin’ Bainbridge Island and Washington State and learning about the way different people debate around the country.

How did you first get involved in debate?

A lot of my friends started debating freshman year, and going to away tournaments sounded cool, so I signed up.

What is your proudest achievement in debate thus far?

My proudest achievement this past season was making it to octas at Big Bronx.

What are your hobbies beyond debate?

I like listening to music, playing guitar, and following sports.

You are departing tomorrow. What were your main goals for VBI@LMU?

My main goals were to become more strategic on the affirmative, and to gain a better understanding of how different arguments interact with each other.

What was your favorite thing about camp?

Although a lot of nights were tough, the camp atmosphere was really chill.
