Debaters of the Day: Kathleen French & Ben Lewis

Kathleen French and Ben Lewis
LOS ANGELES, Cali. – I realize the Walt Whitman repeat may be a “little controversial,” but hey, the feature on Sydney Sivils and Devin Race generated thirty-one comments, so, what can I say.
Each day, I profile two upstanding young students at the Victory Briefs Institute. Today, let’s catch up with Kathleen French of the Hockaday School and Ben Lewis of Walt Whitman High School and subject them to the VBD interview treatment. To find out what they had to say when I caught up with them, please continue reading.

KATHLEEN FRENCH
Affiliation: The Hockaday School (Texas)
Coaches: Stacy Thomas & Tom Evnen
Class: 2009 (Rising Junior)
NFL Degree: Distinction
Lab: Craven/Cooper/Scoggin
How did you first get involved in debate?
My favorite show when I was in first grade was the Practice, so I guess it was one of those destiny things….Actually, we had a fine arts rotation in eigth grade for debate at school and I instantly loved it, and they haven’t kicked me out yet.
What is your proudest achievement in debate thus far?
Probably learning how to read. [laughs] No, getting invited to the women’s round robin was a big achievement for me, and I really learned a lot from the experience.
What are your hobbies beyond debate?
I love hanging out with friends, running, writing, reading….and buying sweatshirts.
What are your main goals for VBI@LMU?
To improve at the flow game.
What is your favorite thing about camp thus far?
I’ve met a lot of really awesome people that I know I will keep in contact with throughout the years to come, and I think I’ve really improved debate-wise as well.

BEN LEWIS
Affiliation: Walt Whitman High School (Maryland)
Coaches: Anjan Choudhury & Tanya Choudhury
Class: 2010 (Rising Sophomore)
NFL Degree: Distinction
Lab: Melin/Mahoney
How did you first get involved in debate?
I heard the coach was sweet and the people nice, and when I realized the extent of the community, I couldn’t help but take part in the activity.
What is your proudest achievement in debate thus far?
Semis at J.V. Columbia. The whole trip was just a bundle of laughter. It might have even been a rainbow of laughter.
What are your hobbies beyond debate?
I do some sports, but I just mostly sleep. Disappointingly, VBI comes into direct conflict with my 4 PM wake-up schedule, but I somehow found a way to persevere.
What are your main goals for VBI@LMU?
To own it up, soak in the sun, and stick it to those Negative Nancies.
What is your favorite thing about camp thus far?
The modules are brilliant and the lab leaders very accessible. But it is all dwarfed by becoming debater of the day. Oh me, oh my.

More controversial might be the absence of students from the Midwest so far – where’s the love for the heartland, the breadbasket of debate, as it were?

I am speechless, which probably explains why I was never debater of the day. Congrats Ben. We are all glowing with a rainbow of pride!
