does anyone have J.W. Patterson’s email or phone number. this is James McGraw and i am the tournament director for Villiger next year. we used to have a quarters LD bid a couple years ago. we are trying to get that bid back, but we could not get in touch with him. also, there has been a lot of buzz on the east coast that villiger or pennsbury get some sort of policy toc bid. please chime in your thoughts. thanks.

Long Beach used to have a finals bid, five or six years ago. I think Garvin won it back then. Those were heady times.

It’s hard to say whether the quality went down or whether it got nudged out by other CA tourneys. It’s a big tournament for sure, with a broad talent pool.

What has to happen before Long Beach gets an LD finals bid?

As I recall, the two varsity finalists from last year both got bids at other tournaments.

LCC actually has decent competition in policy, but the judging pool leaves a lot to be desired. A team from my school (Claremont HS, in souther california) cleared to finals at that tourney this year and got second. The team that they “lost” to dropped two disads and a k but won anyway b/c they were “more persuasive”.

Even so, the team from my school, although they are both chill people, are in no way TOC level debaters.

Sure, there are some good policy debaters in san diego, bu most of them are from La Costa, and so they can’t compete there anyway.

But, who knows? Maybe now that LCC has a bid, the competition and judging will improve enough.

UT can’t have a quarters bid b/c it has 5 rounds.

i’m also really glad LCC got a policy bid, san diego has tons of untapped talent and a bid tournament may be just what it needs to lock into the circuit.

The toughest semis bid in the country is the University of Texas tournament. If any tournament should receive a quarters bid, it should be UT. What should happen is for the Alta Silver and Black to be bumped to a semis and UT to get a quarters. I have been to both and UT is much more competitive.

i cant believe Manchester is still a quarters bid.

and Meadows only had like 15 kids competing in LD last year- that certainly doesn’t qualify it as a finals bid

Was Archer a semis bid last year? If so, congrats to VB for the quarters bid. If not, I guess my memory’s fading. I feel like it was semis pretty recently though.
