LOS ANGELES, Cali. – Students met in Hilton Hall — named, I should note, for Conrad Hilton — after dinner tonight for our institute orientation. Victor Jih kicked off the night by welcoming students to the sixth installment of the modern Victory Briefs Institute and by telling them a little bit about the history of Victory Briefs. (Quick: the first person to be able to correctly post the location of the first iteration of VBI — which existed in the early 1990s — wins a famed VICTORY BRIEFS POLO SHIRT! These, I think, first date back to when I was in high school!)

After that, I got a chance to introduce our staff members and to detail our labs and book groups. (Victor has also encouraged me to do a few “Nerd Night” activities, but more on that later.) Jennie Savage and Adam Torson followed next with an introduction to our camp office. Josh Anderson, Tommy Clancy, and Stephen Babb followed with information on the camp curriculum.

Following these chats on rules, regulations, and expectations, this initial meeting moved into its second phase. Novices broke off to meet with their lab leaders — Adam Nelson, Claire Totten, and Steph Kang — while the remainder of the camp stayed in the auditorium in Hilton to be treated by an engaging and informative introduction to our camp resolution with Wesley Craven of South Eugene and Neil Conrad of Greenhill.
