Code: 290 ~ Beast of No Nation
This was the piece that got first this year at NFL Nationals. It was beautifully done, really well done. The piece was basically about what happens to a boy soldier when civil war breaks out in his West African nation. The boy, Agu, becomes a rebel soldier when his family is taken away from him by the war and he finds that war is not as romantic as he once imagined it would be.
Code: 113-A Time of Terror ~ Robert L. Whitely (Glenbrook South HS)
“After 83 years the ladies still comin.’ Dispite it’s bits of funny one-liners this piece deals with a serious subject matter. A Time of Terror tells the story of the lynching of two boys that divided a nation and of the third one that survived the ordeal. This preformance so captivated the audience that if a pin had dropped, the ping would have been clearly audible. The piece ultimately had the message of forgiveness as the old man that the boy grew into had “never seen a conflict solved with anger.”
Code: 168- Silence, My Mother Speaks (Roseville HS)
This preformance tells the story of a deaf woman, named Lily, whose mother dies giving birth to her and her normal/popular brother. Lily turns to alcohol to deal with the loss of her mother and all the while the sound of her dead mother’s beating heart speaks to her. One day Lily is driving in her car with her brother while intoxicated and crashes the car. She and her brother barely survive the crash but after that her mother’s heart speaks to her in silence instead of the sound of a beating, nervous heart. One notable thing about this preformance was that the girl could cry on que.

Code: 330- Looking a lot like Christmas
This is a bit of a dark comedy. Like Will and Grace… just without the Grace. Peter Engle-Hart is gay. As in G-A-Y. Peter takes us on a journey with him as he explains how he went from being a fairly family oriented person, to being forced to spend Chistmas alone. One day Peter finds a man that he really loves and decides to come clean with his family. He thinks that his family will accept him, only to find that his family love their convictions more then they love their son. Saddened by his family’s choice, Peter head back to the man he loves. But tragedy strikes Peter again when his longtime boyfriend decides to dump him three weeks after coming out to his family. Peter consoles himself by watching Christmas TV specials so that he doesn’t feel so alone.
