Looking Ahead to Next Season
posted by Jon Cruz on June 2nd, 2007
I’ve been spending the past three weeks working out my team’s budget for next year. Central to this budget is money spent on tournaments. So, given that, and given that I am finishing up the new VBD Calendar for next year, it’s time to ask my favorite question: what tournaments do you plan (or hope) to attend next season? Any particular reasons?

greenhill, st. marx becuse they have good judging and good competition. Good competition usually means lots of education on the topic, so we leave that resolution understanding it to the fullest.

the semi-official craven-niemi nationwide tour (tentatively titled “KISS ROXXX IV”) includes:
1. Berkley
2.Greenhill
3.Glenbrooks
4.Apple Valley
5. VBT
6.Blake
7.Barkley forum
8. Stanford
9.St. Mark’s
10. Valley
11. Meadows
The only tournament included for a reason other than shits n’ TOC bids is the Meadows Battle for the Belt. I WANT THAT BELT.

We haven’t finalized the Whitman schedule for next year at all, but I anticipate we’ll start out the year with Greenhill/Wake, Yale/AU, and of course, Bronx! Kudos to Rebar if he can actually cajole Wes into 11 national circuit tournaments next year. Travel diaries for all of them should be required.

SLP is planning on
Apple Valley
Bronx
Dowling
Emory
Glenbrooks
Greenhill
Iowa Caucus
Mark’s
Omaha Westside
Stanford
Valley
We go to every tournament within reasonable driving distance, and then fly to those that we think have exceptional judging and are well run.
I’m probably forgetting something, but that’s at least pretty close to where we’ll be.

due to a bunch of kids who want to go and often limited slots, we dont know who individually is going to which tournaments. if our calendar looks something like this year’s, mv/la will attend the following:
greenhill
st marks
valley
apple valley
glenbrooks
cps (if not before finals, as it was this yr)
vbt
stanford
berkeley
harker
mlk
emory
(and of course toc and nfl nationals! :-P)
that list was from memory so i might be forgetting things.

of course anjan, i have to supply the old dog with only the finest jams and sweetbreads and a large “entertainment” allowance (presumably for the strippers, but he’ll probably just buy mountain dew and cigarettes)
migraines and red-eye flights, here we come!

Looking at Byram Hills’ schedule, it looks like Steiker intends on having us attend every Northeast TOC bid tournament (with the possible exception of harvard), plus Barkley Forum.

MEADOWS. Anybody who is available that weekend should go! No matter where you’re from, airfare into Vegas is dirt cheap, the tournament fee is really low and the lodging is cheap too! The hospitality, competition and surroundings have made it my new favorite “fun/cheap” tournament. I’m going to promise my debaters that if one wins the belt, we’ll go see Robert Goulet and get kicked out screaming “Bobby Darin’s farts sound better! Goulet can’t rock anything except the shrimp buffet! Mel Torme had more talent in one of his jowls!”
See what Vegas does to me? I don’t even know who Bobby Darin IS…

I am putting the finishing touches on some materials for our team’s thirty-seventh annual Awards Convocation — being held tomorrow — and then I’ll be uploading final dates onto the tournament calendar.
Some have e-mailed me asking if we’ll be including next year’s bid statuses on the calendar; these will be confirmed by Dr. Patterson in the next few weeks, and we’ll upload them when he announces them.
I notice I’m posting right under Matt Thomas, so I want to second his encouragement to attend the Kaiser.
And I hope everyone will join is in New York from October 12 to 14 for the New York City Invitational — “Big Bronx XXXVII” — which will be returning to its traditional seven-round format. clearing to sextodecimofinals and featuring some of the handsomest hardware and highest-quality judges around. Come join us in the Bronx!

I just wanted to give a quick update on the tournament calendar: Bietz made a smart suggestion to integrate the calendar into the main web site a bit more than the old one (www.victorybriefsdaily.com/calendar) so I am working on that now. Thank you to the MANY programs that have sent in dates! Keep them coming.

Any thought of creating a VBD calendar in Google’s calendar applicaiton? Then readers could subscribe to it in their own GCal, iCal, or via XML/RSS.
Somebody made one last year and it was nice to overlay it with our own calendar.
Andy.
