It would certainly be bad luck to debate Jon Kwan, then David McGough (however his name is spelled), then Nick Tourville in the first three rounds (no offense to anyone else and not to say those are the best three debaters there, but I think winning an octo bid tournament qualifies you as a tough draw).

In Round 4, I judged one of the best rounds I’ve seen with Becca Traber affirming against Susan Morrow. Sadly, both debaters were 2-down going into the round.
Susan picked up. Regardless WOW, that was an amazing round (thank you to both debaters for awesome performances).
Only at the TOC could that ever be a 2-down matchup in round 4.

There definitely is a shortage in videos… we were trying to teach incoming 8th graders how to debate (so they are all ready for 9th grade), but the only video we could find was Diehl vs. Tourville. We decided that we actually wanted the eighth graders to stick around for next year, so we didn’t show them the world’s fastest theory debate.

to fisch:
i know you can find videos from last year’s TOC on vbd, in addition to that i think you can buy videos of demonstration debates from VBD. I don’t know about the videos that VBD sells (i haven’t watched any), but there are quite a few TOC videos that are extremely educational
hope that helps
p.s-i hope there’s a cali closeout, cause that would be sweet.

Go Foothill AF!
Go Spiritos!
Questions:
-When will runoff rounds for LD be held?
-Is VB taping outrounds, if so which ones?
-If VB is taping run-offs, which ones?
Also, when can I expect to see videos posted?
(remember guys no mic mishaps!?)

To Fisch:
On google video there is a round between Deihl and P.Rai in addition to finals of the Rising Star pod from the last years voices round robin. The later is fast but no where near as fast as Deihl vs. Tourville.
If you want a quality slower debate, check the video on the VBD of David Weeks vs. P.Rai from last years TOC (semis round).

If you’re looking for a slow video that is pretty easy to understand, I suggest the Jeffers v. Dudley from the bubble round from last year’s TOC. If you’re showing it to novices, it works well as there is no theory, no spreading, and the arugments are on the whole, pretty easy to follow.

To Roytman and those watching the RFDs of SLP NT v. GBN MR:
Given that we have the reputation of liking grammatical positions, I wanted to set the record straight and acknowledge that mass nouns do exist and that they are not always collective nouns. I was wrong to conflate the two (though “standards” is not a mass noun). Great job, Michael, on a strong run at the TOC.

traditionally, videos usually are uploaded two weeks after the tournament

videos,
awesome as it would be to get the videos right this moment, keep in mind that the people who would be uploading them are actually at the tournament right now. Making us wait a bit while they get back and get some much-needed rest really isn’t that terrible, is it?
Posted from: 69.120.236.168

Why doesn’t Victory Briefs put their videos on Google Video? It would be easier to access…
Posted from: 24.176.242.93
May 6th, 2007 18:50
Right this moment would probably be bad…competitively I mean. Not that people shouldn’t prep multiple cases, but at any rate their potential opp’s would be able to block the videoed case word for word…which could potentially be bad.
Although, I don’t think the TOC is 2 weeks draining? I’m not complaining, just anxious.

Remember that’s not confirmed, it was just what a previous poster had said. It could just be like what happened last year where a bunch of people said Dweeks def. I wasn’t expecting to only have two minutes or so to speak, so my comments weren’t quite as “eloquent” or organized as I would have liked. But I would like to reiterate (more clearly, I hope), what I wanted to impart to both debaters after the round: thank you for an excellent season and for a really top-rate final round. Congratulations to you, and to your coaches, Dave, Corbin, Aaron, and Neil on an awesome conclusion to what has been an awesome season for both of you.
Importantly, I’m excited that the round will be shared with everyone online, because I think it was really accessible and demonstrative of serious debate skills.
Great job, and again, congratulations!

first, sir, i think that the fact that DFK beat a negating Diehl shows that DFK is better. Diehl’s lost, like, two neg rounds. The rounds DFK has lost against other debaters were obviously illegit.

secondly- congrats to jake nebel. i don’t really know him but do know that he was the former NDF NOVICE DEMO ROUND CHAMPION!!! Breaking at TOC as Sophomore is pretty intense so congrats on that.
third- congrats to nathan and the marcus squad. I really think that the marcus program is a great example of hard work and dedication. good job kris and i have your ten bucks from dinner the other night.
fourth- good job justin. hope you learned some life lessons from debate and made some good friends.
and finally- thanks to jon cruz for providing outstanding coverage to people like me who couldn’t make it out to lexington this year. you provide a great service and do it week in and week out. thanks for providing great coverage…

Haven’t checked this site for a while but CONGRATULATIONS to all the debaters who did well.
This is meant as a serious question and not meant in any way to take away from Patrick (who I have had the chance to judge a few times and have always been impressed) BUT:
Does it say anything about the current state of LD debate that a debater who goes from a mediocre policy career (through his 1st two years at least) to a win at TOC only 2 years later, the biggest tournament of the year?

we would like to add that diehl’s toc victory means nothing in the face of jkwan’s great second semester and overall debate skill. His writing skill and superiority in argumentation turns us on and sometimes even makes us hard.

Listen I know I’m the first one here to ask this question, but when are the videos…
seriously though, this is addressed to Mr. Cruz, who I don’t know when he might possibly see this, but if you could give a timetable of some sort and list who you taped for us to at least salivate at the pavlovian concept of toc videos, I think that would mitigate all the constant requests and be really nice overall. just whenever you get the time. I personally look forward to these videos ever since Jeffers-Dudley from last year, so any videos would be awesome. Thank you for posting videos Mr. Cruz, this I cannot say enough.
Also congrats to everyone who qualified, and broke, and won the tournament.

After a long weekend of very excellent rounds (I ended up judging every elim round — by the way, in Sems, Gil and Massey were on bottom), I want to second Jon Cruz in saying I only wish I could have been more eloquent in my RFD in the final round. Soo….
I just wanted to congratulate both Patrick and David for being some of the smartest and most thoughtful debaters I have ever had the privilege to judge. Similarly, congratulations to both of their coaching squads — no one at the TOC could possibly have missed the effort that Dave, Corbin, Michelin, etc. and Aaron and Neil put into assisting their students throughout this weekend. The final round was excellent on several levels, and the matchup was a reflection of what happens when substance, intelligence, and dedication meet.
And, of oourse, the number of people I could congratulate even beyond these individuals are endless. Just to single out a few whom – in the middle of the elims craziness I did not get to recognize: Daniel Cory, I said this to someone at dinner tonight: “In my opinion, there was no other debater at this tournament whom I would have been more interested to see hit an innovative strategy like the VIC, than Daniel Cory – he is flat out brilliant.” Matt Aks, you are the kind of student and leader who keeps people coaching – the spirit you showed this weekend will take you far. The Hockadaisies, who indisputably demonstrate what it means to be a team. And Becca and Susan, because your round on day 1 could have easily been one of the best elim rounds at the TOC that was simply placed on the wrong day.
Finally, a congrats to my own student Xiaoqi. It is no easy task to step out on the national circuit as a Senior, and to have a winning record at the TOC is a real accomplishment.
Best Line of the Weekend:
Wesley Craven, on observing a menu:
“Buffalo Chicken Fingers, hmmm, two animals and a piece of anatomy . . . I’ll have that.”

I am obviously biased, but I think Gavin Newton-Tanzer deserves a massive congratulations. For someone who’s only done debate for 2 years (or anyone really), having a winning record at the TOC, especially when 5 of the people you hit cleared, is incredible.
Also, congrats to Daniel, David, Nathan, Joan, Lindsay, and Taarini. You finished off a great year for Texas.
And finally, congrats to Patrick, for obvious reasons.

Congrats to everyone who did well, especially Lynbrook for having the first seed, first speaker, and champion and a very good shot at a close-out. The win was especially impressive given that Dave spent the entire weekend under the agonizing mental pressure of not yet having seen Spiderman 3.
Also, I want to personally congratulate Nick on what ended up being a great tournament despite the ups and downs along the way. You always want to know how things would have turned out if you had won that last round, but you gave it your best shot and did some pretty impressive stuff along the way and have a ton to be proud of. Now just go win NFLs…

Of course, enormous congratulations to Patrick and David, two great friends who are also incredible debaters. I’m really glad I got to debate each of you this weekend and I’m especially glad that my last round of debate was a really incredible round with Patrick.
Also, I wanted to recognize Susan, Elyse, and Roytman, three awesome debaters that I know I at least wanted to see take home ponies this weekend.
But more than anything, I just wanted to say thanks to the class of 2007–anyone who has seen the members of our class knows that, by and large, we’re all really close to one another. I think that was exemplified when, this weekend, losses weren’t met with anger and disappointment but instead hugs and congratulatory remarks. The rapport among our class is something I’ve really enjoyed this year and I just wanted to thank everyone for that.

Thank you for the kind words about the coverage.
Wes Craven and Mike Bietz coordinated this year’s video coverage; they can better answer a question about a timetable, as I am admittedly not sure when they will be posted. I know that Wes (our camera operator) went the extra mile and taped a good number of prelim rounds as well, which is something we haven’t done in the past.
I agree that these videos are great teaching tools and I look forward to having them available for my own debaters as well.
While I am not a member of the class of 2007, I do want to echo Miss Huberlie’s very true comments about the sense of comraderie that was quite evident throughout the tournament.

I’d also like to recognize and thank Liz Mullins and Matthew Shields, two former students of mine, for their invaluable help before and during the tournament.
Finally, thanks to Greg Malis and Dr. Patterson for running another terrific TOC.

congratulations to patrick for a great finish.
with response to landon’s post (381), i think that it’s unfair to assume that diehl was just a mediocre policy debater who couldn’t hack it. as i’m sure you know, policy is a research-intensive activity that requires a good partner, a good policy coaching staff, and a sizeable research budget to do well–none of which patrick really had access to. even those schools who were not stereotypical “big programs” (st. augustine last year, woodlands this year, etc.) had two very skilled debaters and access to some solid coaching. one of the virtues of LD is its accessibility and ability of brilliant and hard-working debaters to pop out of the woodwork and become extremely successful (anyone old enough to remember menlo-atherton or howland in 2004?), and apparently patrick follows in a long tradition of debaters who took advantage of that virtue.

diehl for doing what he said he would at camp
jkwan for being pretty phenomenal at debate
ali for always underestimating herself
nick for beating both myself and jkwan in very impressive rounds on his part
and mcgough for being the most consistent debate this year
i also want to thank my mean, overly pessimistic, borderline evil but phenomenal coaching staff of paul and mangus for teaching me the importance of being good, and the differance between being good and winning
Posted from: 69.249.88.35

Congratulations to everyone who cleared, and to Diehl and David- it always sucks to lose rounds, but dropping to you two wasn’t that bad. Yesterday I had my last LD debate round ever, but good luck to everyone competing at NFLs.
It was difficult not having a coach at TOCs, and I wanted to thank Thomas Brugato and Ryan Lawrence for helping me prep before my quarters round, Dan Meyers for answering all of my spontaneous questions and making fun of the Northeast, Peter Petraro for teaching me so much about debate, everyone who provided unconditional encouragement since I was a sophomore- Jon Cruz comes to mind, and to the enthusiastic Millburn debaters on my team, especially Jake and Usha (going 4-3 as a junior is impressive). Debate has meant a lot to me over the last four years, so thanks for that.
Finally, last year there was a “case-posting” thread on Westman/LDdebate.org, and I’m not sure if enough people check theldboards.org yet to make this worthwhile posting there. I think its really valuable to read other people’s cases, even if just for fun. My cases certainly have enough flaws, but if there are any debaters following tocs or people at toc or people who won toc who would like to read my cases, email me at greghertz AT gmail.com.

I echo John Lewis’s words with pride. Gavin Newton-Tanzer definitely deserves a bunch of credit for his performance at the TOC. It truly takes talent for someone to pick up debate in the middle of junior year and excell at it as Gavin did. From the amount of work he did to actually start a debate team here at Newtown High to his overall character as an individual, Gavin has proven to be a brilliant person. He has not only been institutional to my growth as a debater but also to my growth as a person. Thanks a lot Gavin.

Good job Daniel. It’s good to see someone be successful running stuff that’s interesting and not easy to understand (even though a lot of people hated you for it). It’s been a pleasure hanging out with the Cory’s these past several years.

Matt Aks—seriously, what a great way to end an amazing run. Your semis round was easily one of the best rounds i’ve seen this year. Awesome, awesome job– its been swt being on a team with you.

Re: Mediocre Policy Debater
While I’ll leave the question of Diehl’s policy success unanswered, I don’t think anyone can doubt his LD abilities after this weekend. However, I just thought it was worth noting that both finalists were former policy debaters, and even the lexington team that won PFD was composed of a former LDer and a former Policy/LDer (yeah Garth).

To Alex and Ardevan: Cool, I agree. I just found it interesting more than anything. Patrick is definitely great and I meant no disrespect. Congratulations to everyone who participated and major props to everyone who broke/won the tournament!

first off, let me echo allison and say that i have so much respect and fondness for all the seniors of ’07. it’s been a fun year.
congrats to patrick, david, and their coaches on much-deserved endings to excellent seasons.
special thank yous to my incredible teammates, all of whom were so supportive throughout the entire season, and toc was no exception. you’re all awesome. i’d also like to thank the surrogate scarsdalians- josh anderson, chris castillo and liz viera- for being so dedicated to our team’s performance this past weekend.
finally, for people who are wondering about videos, i was taped four times: rd 2 aff vs. spirtos, rd 6 neg vs. ravi, quarters aff vs. abell, semis aff vs. diehl.

Thanks to everyone who has congratulated me or the team. I want to thank Corbin Cass, who is both frighteningly intelligent and a very thoughtful coach. Lynbrook has been endlessly lucky to have his help this year. (Making flights, however, is not his strongest suit. :)
Huge thanks to Michelin Massey, surrogate coach and Official Good Luck Charm. Michelin has taught me a lot about debate over the years and to have a chance to travel and work with him has been a real treat.
Thanks to Eric Palmer and the MVLA/Pine Crest crew who helped out in the stretch. EPalm is clearly one of the great debate minds of recent years.
Thanks to Aaron Timmons, David McGough and everyone from Greenhill. Consistently the ‘Hill sets the standard for both competitive excellence and integrity in LD debate.
This year was my 8th TOC, with some good and some less-good performances over the years. But every year it is the most challenging and fun event of the season. Huge thanks to Dr. Patterson and all the TOC staff and committee members who make this event the stellar season-topper that it is.
Finally, it can’t happen often that a coach has the opportunity to work with two kids like Diehl and JKwan in one year. It is the most fun I’ve ever had (at least in debate). Those kids are brilliant, hard-working, and great leaders. (I imagine this is how Pam and Cherian felt during the Chris/Tim years, or how Mike felt during the Nick/Jon/Jed years.) Good job, guys. Thanks for an unbelievable season.

I would like to send a shout out to Dave and Patrick, two of the strongest and nicest debaters that I had the oppurtunity to compete with this year. Both of you deserved to do as well as you did.
I would like to thank Beena, Chetan, Matt Shields, and my life coach/former team mate Liz Mullins for all their help. I really would not have been able to get anywhere without your help so thanks a lot!
TOC was a really gratifying experience and I’m looking forward to next year! Great job to all.

I would like to say thank you to everyone who has posted nice things on these boards. I really do appreciate your sincerity. I agree with Ali and Matt that what makes our year great is that we all got along so well and were able to coexist as competitors and friends. TOC was my hardest tournament yet, and with the change of one or two judges’ minds I would have been eliminated early. The competition was fantastic and I had some very close rounds. I’d also like to thank Dave, Corbin, and Michelin who spent their entire weekend judging, scouting, prepping, and generally encouraging Jon and I. Without their help I can easily say we would not have done as well as we did.

I’d like to thank Diehl and Jkwan, especially for serving as role models for younger Bay Area debaters. Both of you have had a positive impact on my excelling as a debater and I am extremely grateful to have known both of you. Best of luck in college and in the future.
Sincerely,
Daniel Khalessi

Major congrats are in order to Patrick Diehl. I judged Patrick’s first bid round (at his first varsity tournament in LD!) vs. Grant Brown, and it was evident then that he had incredible talent and promise. As is more than apparent, he lived up to the hype in every possible way. He truly is the Real Diehl.
Congrats also to lab veterans John Robert, Spirit, Trillville and Hideki for clearing, to Roytman for having the heart of a lion, to Allison Huberlie, and to Matt Aks (you have now supplanted Mike Mencher as my favorite Scarsdale debater of all time).
Finally, I’d like to congratulate Dave McGinnis and Corbin Cass on a great tournament and a fantastic year. Corbin is a brilliant guy, and Dave is, in my view, the best new guard lifer in the business. Enjoy your first ring!

[from an undisclosed location deep underground]
Wow. What a tournament. From the train ride and blathering travel updates (I haven’t reread them, I’m going to repress that I posted them) to sitting at the waffle house with Bietz and my boy schiffy, to perpetrating the biggest squirreling of my career as a critic, this was one hell of a tournament.
There will be plenty of time for discussion, defensiveness and explanation about my finals decision later (if you were me, would you watch the video?!), but now is the time for props:
Congratulations Patrick. You have made me reflect on my role as a critic more than any other debater the last few years; from the Stanford round against Leiter to the last round of your career, I’ve put some intense thought into LD that wouldn’t have happened without you pushing me to think and rethink what it means to judge this activity. Now that I think about it, you suck. My life would be a lot easier without you challenging me to imagine that LD could be so much better then it is. In all seriousness, you’ve given me faith that our activity can embrace new conventions and styles without settling for mediocrity. You are a credit to this activity and I couldn’t think of a more deserving debater to receive this honor (both of them, damn dude, champ and top speaker-that is outstanding). So congrats, and I can’t wait to be on a panel with you (dude, if I squirrel you will give me MAD shit).
Congrats to David, who represented Greenhill with excellence and prestige. It was pretty crazy remembering when we met at TOC last year, in very different circumstances. It has been an honor to judge you and frankly, your rounds have been some of the most sophisticated but clean and substantive debates I’ve ever judged. You earned the honor of debating in the final round of the TOC and it was awesome to see such a classy and talented debater do so well at this tournament. You have so much to offer the debate community, I can only hope that debaters are lucky enough to learn from you how to debate the way you did; clear, substantive and strategic. We’ll make a deal; if you can teach debaters to do that, I’ll pick them up (probably-no promises, I’m now notoriously unpredictable because of you:) Congrats man.
Matt Aks, I already gave you the sentimental stuff when I dropped you in semi’s (I didn’t say much, but hopefully you saw how tough it was on me). All the shit I told the fools above applies to you. One extra note for any TOC hopeful who is reading this: Matt emailed me before the tournament, asking about a round I’d judged him in that he’d been unable to discuss because he’d had to catch a plane. Then he asked me a couple questions about my paradigm-I’ve never had a debater do that before a tournament; but Matt was taking this seriously and it was that attitude and work ethic that took him to the semifinals of the nation’s most competitive and prestigious tournament. I hope we get the chance to work together in the future, Matt, because you are one of those debaters who make me proud to participate in this activity. Congrats on getting the first thirty I gave out at a circuit tournament in, well, I don’t even know…and GET OUT OF MY HEAD, MAN.
God all the sentiment! I’m a cheeser, deal with it.
There are so many other debaters and coaches who made me proud or happy or amused this weekend, the three above are just the tip of the iceberg, but props to all those not mentioned, judges who were forced to keep some of the best debaters in the country from breaking, amazing debaters and coaches who worked their asses off, labbies who kicked ass, friends who made me laugh, it exemplified the one part of my travel log that I will remember, my description of the TOC:
“Oh the blood! The stench, the ulcers, the ink, the headaches, the mutilated egos, the chain-smoking coaches, the judge with her hands holding the sides of her head as she decides, the look all us judges get when we finally make the decision; an imperceptible surrender, the bonds and friendship and sympathy and celebration and oh yeah, the debate.”
-when I wrote that I didn’t realize I’d get one of the mutilated egos :)
It was the war to end all wars and it happens every year. Thanks to everyone who made it possible for me to come: Victor and Bietz for bringing me out at the last minute, Jon for cajoling me into writing the travel logs, Jeremy for hanging with me and just being there, Liz for being such a great friend, Josh and Babb for supporting me, freaking everybody. ..Except whoever apparently won the money in the pool on who would squirrel in the final round. I want a cut of that you unbeliever, if you didn’t have faith in me the least you could do is share the winnings with a poor starving squirrel…just send it to my underground bunker’s undisclosed address.
Oh, and as far as the videos go, just sit tight. Anyone begging for the videos can shut up and be patient; Victory Briefs didn’t have to pay money and put up with me all weekend just to offer free videos to the community…be grateful they made the investment (and sacrifice) and just pray that I remembered to take the lens cap off.
