TOC finalists David McGough and Patrick Diehl

LEXINGTON, Ky. - After a compiling major successes across the national circuit throughout the season, and following success at this most difficult of tournaments, Lynbrook High School’s Patrick Diehl and Greenhill School’s David McGough for advanced to the final round of the Tournament of Champions! Congratulations to both!

On a 7-2 decision, Patrick — who had earlier won the Walter Alan Ulrich Award for placing as top speaker — claimed the TOC title. Josh Anderson, Jason Baldwin, Anjan Choudhury, Nick Coburn-Palo, Jon Cruz, Victor Jih, and Pam Cady Wycoff negated for Patrick. Wesley Craven and Beena Koshy dissented, affirming for David.

Patrick is coached by Dave McGinnis and Corbin Cass. David is coached by Aaron Timmons and Neil Conrad.

Images from the tournament, as well as archived commentary from the BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS, will be available soon.

It would certainly be bad luck to debate Jon Kwan, then David McGough (however his name is spelled), then Nick Tourville in the first three rounds (no offense to anyone else and not to say those are the best three debaters there, but I think winning an octo bid tournament qualifies you as a tough draw).

In Round 4, I judged one of the best rounds I’ve seen with Becca Traber affirming against Susan Morrow. Sadly, both debaters were 2-down going into the round.

Susan picked up. Regardless WOW, that was an amazing round (thank you to both debaters for awesome performances).

Only at the TOC could that ever be a 2-down matchup in round 4.

Eric Sporkin is down three. I believe he lost round 6 to Pam Brown, but my memory could be faulty.

There definitely is a shortage in videos… we were trying to teach incoming 8th graders how to debate (so they are all ready for 9th grade), but the only video we could find was Diehl vs. Tourville. We decided that we actually wanted the eighth graders to stick around for next year, so we didn’t show them the world’s fastest theory debate.
