Sarah Smilkstein is Oregon State Champion

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Kyle Krohn has reported in with the results of the Oregon State Activities Association, U.S. Bank, and Les Schwab Tires 2007 Speech State Championships. More than 475 high school students representing sixty-six schools participated at the tournament, which was held at Western Oregon University this past Thursday through Saturday.

Congratulations to the finalists, Sarah Smilkstein of Lincoln High School and Rafael Baptista of Westview High School! In the final round, Sarah defeated Rafael to win the state title.

Sarah is coached by Bart Millar. Rafael is coached by Trudi L. Gessford Harte.

Congratulations are also in order for the champions of “Oregon Style Cross-Examination Debate,” as policy is styled in the Beaver State: Alan Hsu and Ferris Zhang of Westview, and John Tan and Nima Ahmadi, also of Westview, closed out the final round and were declared State Co-champions of 2007.

Finally, congratulations to the finalists in Public Forum Debate! The Madison High School team of Sophia Sanders and Casey Wang defeated the Westview team of Andrei Tutui and Emily Watson to win the OSAA championship in that division.

The Madison Mad Mouths are coached by John Patrick Gonzales. Westview is coached by Trudi L. Gessford Harte.
