Submit Results to the NDR
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Last fall Jeb Puryear, administrator of the National Debate Rankings, got a new job and was unable to run the NDR for this past season. During this time I started searching around for a new system to do the debate rankings and came across the Elo system (used to rank chess players). Coincidentally, Jeb also came up with the idea of using this same system. He is back and he, along with an intern, Vineet Singal, will be compiling results.
The nice thing about the Elo system is that it will not apply top-down designations for “strong tournaments,” but will rather gauge its strength based on the debaters who attend the tournament. You can read an explanation at the NDR web site.
Also, we need you to submit results! Dave McGinnis had been scanning and emailing me results to put on the Wiki. This process seemed a little tedious. So what I have done is set up an exclusive fax number for you to send in your results: (866) 612-3691. You can also send results via e-mail to results@nationaldebaterankings.net. There are certain restrictions on format, please read them here.
NOTE: Since we are trying to get the most accurate rankings, we are not limiting submission to TOC tournaments. We want all results from any Varsity or “Open” level tournament. There is more information at the web site.

Bietz and Jeb — this is awesome stuff. Thank you so much for bringing this back. I know a number of programs used the NDR in the past to help make the case to their schools for more funding and increased administrative support.
And Vineet — we’re all proud that our resident mathematical genius is helping out with this new system. :o)

For a program like Strake Jesuit that just recently began to compete on the national circuit, the NDR is invaluable. None of the athletic teams get to travel much and as a result there has been a continual requirement for me to justify a budget large enough to enable travel. The NDR has helped and will continue to help in the future.

The web site indicates the rankings will begin with the 2007-2008 season – is that correct, or are you seeking results from the current season?

the system will begin regular updates during the 07-08 season, but it is built to carryover results from previous years to increase the stability and feasibility of the rankings…I have all the 04-05 and 05-06 data I collected while doing the NDR, we’re looking for all the 06-07 we can get our hands on. The opportunity is also being taken to collect additional results from previous years

You’ve probably already thought of this, but checking the results section of the Joy of Tournaments website should get you packets from many 06-07 tournaments. Another website to check is DebateResults (e.g. for Berkeley).

The Elo ranking system is named after Arpad Elo, who invented it. Elo is not an acronym.

This is great news!
One question though, I went to the site and saw the ranks from 04-05, but not from 05-06 why is that? I know they were up before…

go to nationaldebaterankings.com That site has the ‘05-’06 rankings. Does anyone know how long it will take to put up the 06-07 rankings?

I am running all the tournament data I used in the old NDR through the new system. I have finished the 04-05 data and am about to start with the 05-06 stuff – look for updates on .net site in the coming weeks
