Chris Theis Wins the Iowa Round Robin

Ben Schifberg and Chris Theis
IOWA CITY – Congratulations to the finalists at this year’s Iowa Round Robin! The by-invitation tournament, hosted by the A. Craig Baird Debate Forum at the University of Iowa, came to a close this afternoon. The tournament cleared to the Top Twelve.
The final round featured Apple Valley High School’s Chris Theis and South Eugene High School’s Ben Schifberg. On a 3-0 decision, Chris — the runner-up at last year’s Iowa Round Robin — claimed the title. Congratulations to both competitors!
Chris is coached by Pam Cady Wycoff, Cherian Koshy, and Tim Hogan. Ben is coached by Wesley Craven. Photographs will be uploaded tomorrow.

In true south eugene fashion, tardy to the party.
Nothing beats getting off a plane full of rednecks and being greeted by Jon Cruz’s smile! Ahhh…back to ‘normal’.

Is Ross brown a freshman? I know he didn’t debate last year. If so, breaking (as 4th seed) is hella impressive.

Congratulations to Chris and Ben on an interesting and competitive final round. You are both unquestionably top debaters from the sophomore class and it was awesome seeing you compete this weekend.
I want to take a moment to thank Paul Bellus for an absolutely fantastic weekend.
Despite all of my debate-related travels, this was actually my first time in the state of Iowa, and I cannot imagine a more gracious host. Matt and I had a great time all weekend, from the delicious food to engaging critics to beautiful trophies to some more delicious food, every moment was memorable and a lot of fun.
Thank you so much, Paul. We look forward to future trips to the Hawkeye State!

Paul and the Iowa team delivered an outstanding round robin. This judging pool was a relief, a chance for the debaters to focus only on execution and not on excuses.
Ben and I threw off the chains of adaptive paranoia (“so, I can do pretty much whatever I want”) to the occasional offense of my educational sensibilities…Ben you’re still in trouble for ASPEC ;), and FYI anytime I hear someone come out of your outround and say “the round hinges on whether or not ben’s balibar ev made sense” I lose several years of my life.
The opportunity to see this generation of debaters begin the throw down-amazing! If I wasn’t coaching the outstanding South sophmores and the notorious r.e.b.a.r. I think I’d buy 2 years worth of popcorn, buy tickets to the next two years of circuit tournaments, and become a professional debate spectator (A foam finger, air horn and giant cowboy hat would be a great addition to any round).
I confirmed once again that I love everyone in the debate community (if you just rolled your eyes then I love you even more!) Sometimes I have to work a little harder than usual-though not for anyone at this round robin! Thanks friends for such a great experience.
Oh, and Cherian, Tim and Chris-congratulations! Chris: you scare me. In a good way. :)
Finally, a quick eulogy for that damned evolver case (survivor, evolver, revolver, bevolver, benvolver); I thought it had finally died but we resurrected it for the round robin, and it continued to defy fate by winning rounds. In LD we always banter over ‘what justice is’: All those rounds it was extended with little to no responsiveness at the case level finally caught up to it: for a case that said science is truth, extinction is always just around the corner and morality is our salvation…A kritik of scientific rationalism WAS JUSTICE. :)

Atta baby bro, you’re making us real proud
Posted from: 71.237.221.115
April 16th, 2007 11:51
nah, the terrorism stuff was either baudrillard or teays, i think. Ben would know (it changed round by round).
the balibar evidence is an old card i cut for Ben’s bro Jeremy long ago -it’s just a restatement of the basic ‘free decisions as opposed to necessary decisions are prerequisites for justice’-the confusion i joke about is that it’s often tricky to package (the resolutional link was nothing special-just another ‘corps can’t make free decisions so negate’ but the packaging was meant to deal with inevitable ac preempts).
wade, you should be the model for how to become a better debater; you self-motivated learners are the #&@^
