Thank you to Todd Fine for the heads up about this historically significant NDT final round. Congratulations to the debaters and to Melissa Maxcy Wade, Bill Newnam, David Heidt, and company.

Congratulations to Michael Mangus for qualifying to the NDT, an extremely impressive accomplishment for any freshman. This is all the more impressive given that he just started policy this year. Nice job.

I believe Stefan Bauschard was also the tournament host…which is pretty cool. :o)

oh pps the decision was a 4-1, emory was neg. the panel was matheson, topp, slusher, atchison, turner. i think turner was on bottom; not 100% sure.

Thanks for the correction; that’s spelling of the names that I found on the NDT web site, but upon second look I noticed a few typos on that site, so I’m going to default to what the packet had.

Congrats to OU’s team; they were in semis of NDT nationals, took 2nd place for the Copeland Award, and won CEDA nationals. Very impressive, especially considering their program is less than 5 years old. It will also interest the LD heavy readers of VB to know that Blake Johnson, of OU’s team, cut his teeth in LD, having done it throughout his career at Edmond Santa Fe high school. I’m pleased to say that I have met both Blake and Conor, and I hope OU is showing them lots of love for their accomplishments. They’ve earned it.

Seamus, did Blake do only LD in high school or did he do it along with doing policy? I actually did not know that. There are streams of finals and semis of CEDA online where they run a pretty bad ass K if anyone is interested.

Blake did a couple policy tournaments, but not really enough to call him a policy debater in high school. Also, Conor did policy but he never traveled outside of Oklahoma in high school. They also won Harvard, Wake Forest, Norhtwestern, and they got 3rd and 4th speaker at the NDT (and I can’t remember what place, but both in the top 10 at CEDA nats). And if you want to hear me bitch you can IM me about the Copeland, but suffice to say I don’t think they should have gotten second.

The above is correct as far as what I know about Blake in HS. I judged him in LD at districts in a year where I think he qualified to NFL’s–he was good. I would like to have seen them win the Copeland, but really just because I’m a homer; I didn’t follow the college debate except to keep up on what OU was doing.

Blake went to camp at UNT when it was the championship debate group. Mazin, Mr. Huston and I all taught there.

I’m assuming the above is Bietz. If so, do you happen to know what Mazin is doing these days? His name didnt pop up on the Martindale Hubble index of lawyers, but I know he was interested in maybe working in Germany, so if he is in fact practicing outside of the USA that would explain it.

I got judged by Julie Hoehn at Emory’s PFD Final Tourney for their camp. My camp partner and I pulled out the win from the future NDT winner. Even being judged by her is pretty darn cool.
