Hockaday Sweeps the Lone Star Women’s Round Robin

Joan Gass and Catherine Tarsney
DALLAS, Texas – Greetings from the third annual Lone Star Women’s Round Robin, an all-female competitor Lincoln-Douglas event hosted by Stacy Thomas and the Hockaday School. The tournament has concluded.
In the demonstration round for the TOC Division — which featured the Hockaday School’s Joan Gass against St. Louis Park High School’s Catherine Tarsney — Hockaday emerged victorious. The panel consisted of Jennie Savage, Casi Heri, Jessie Stellmach, Jenn Miller, and a student panel. (Stellmach dissented.)

Shivani Vohra and Sally Walstrom
Congratulations to Hockaday’s Shivani Vohra who defeated El Cerrito High School’s Sally Walstrom in the demo round for the Rising Stars division. The decision was unaninimous; with Liz Scoggin, Jessie Stellmach, and the remaining students adjudicating.

Divya Balan and Elizabeth Owens
Kudos also to Divya Balan from Hockaday who bested Elizabeth Owens from Reagan High School in the Locals demo round. (It was a 2-1 decision. The panel consisted of Jane Boyd, Tatiana Cottam, and the student vote; Boyd dissented.)
Joan, Shivani, and Divya are coached by Stacy Thomas and Tom Evnen. Catherine is coached by Christian Tarsney, Heather Hamilton, and Kendra Oyer. Sally is coached by Hirsh Jain. Elizabeth is coached by Heather Hayes Keith.
Full results follow.
Participants were treated to a number of lectures: John Lewis gave an introduction to Habermas and Derrida, Stacy Thomas’s “Feminism(s)” lecture followed, and Liz Scoggin and Stacy Thomas completed the evening with an open forum on issues women debaters face. Andy Werner’s “The Prestandard & ‘A Priori’ Trend” came this morning and was followed bv Dallas mayor Laura Miller speaking to the participants about her experiences as a woman in real-life politics.

I’d like to echo Nathan: this looks like a phenomenal weekend.
I deeply regret that I cannot attend in person, but I know that Melanie and Doug are looking forward to what is sure to be a deeply educational and enjoyable weekend.
I’ve been fortunate to judge many of the debaters across all three pools in this tournament and I know Stacy has truly brought together some of the nation’s most talented and dedicated competitors. Thank you for thinking of us and including us in this event.

Good luck to Arti for being wonderful. Aushianna and Liz for kicking ass and Monica and Vivian (hope you guys don’t hit each other!) all from Tommy lab 06′. Maybe his tendency to hit the piano keys whenever we slipped up during speed drills was worth it?
