LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – After three days of hard-fought competition, the 2007 Louisiana High School Speech League (LHSSL) Tournament of Champions has come to a close. Congratulations to:
- Kathryn Barry of Teurlings Catholic High School and Ian Gunn of New Orleans Jesuit High School — the two Louisiana LDers to win bids to the other TOC this year – who faced each other in the Advanced Lincoln-Douglas Finals. Kathryn won the debate and, with it, the state title. (She also made the final round in Extemp.) Kathryn is coached by Josette Surratt; Ian is coached by Travis Ian Smith. (A photo of the ALD finalists is forthcoming.)
- Kenneth Cross of Ruston High School and Joe Billiot of Comeaux High School, who faced off in the Intermediate Lincoln-Douglas final. Kenneth won the round, helping the north Louisiana school take a third place trophy in the overall sweepstakes. Kenneth is coached by Monica Olsen; Joe is coached by Lisa Jones and Sandra Broussard.
- William Simoneaux of New Orleans Jesuit High School and Garrett Fontenot of Barbe High School, who clashed in the Novice Lincoln-Douglas final. William one-upped his ALD teammate, winning the round and the title. William is coached by Travis Ian Smith. Garrett is coached by Carla Washburn.
- Tyler Dunphy and Samantha Peltier of St. Thomas More, who took the title in Advanced Policy Debate. Tyler and Samantha are coached by Scott Johnstone and Jennifer Bullock. Tyler also deserves congratulations in his own right for beating a strong field to become the champion of Extemporaneous Speaking. His performances also got him the tournament’s Forensic Award.
- Justin Cantu of Teurlings Catholic and Matthew Moore of Ruston, who won the House and Senate, respectively. Justin is coached by Josette Surratt; Matthew is coached by Monica Olsen.

I was on spring break this past week and spent most of it in Louisiana. I spent a day with my former colleagues at their state tournament. I spent 6 great years teaching and coaching there. Just the 7 hrs on Saturday that I was visiting brought back all of the wonderful memories. Congrats to the entire state for still trying to build back up some great forensics programs. They have achieved much but have a long way to go. They have loyal supporters and followers all over the country, but none greater that my wife and I from Chicago.

Jordan — you left that comment within the ninety-second span in which that problem occurred. I am impressed.
Unrelated aside — I think it is awesome that Greg went by to support the tournament while he was in town.

Congrats to the coaches like Travis and Greg (and Ian G. unofficially) who give up their weekends, nights and family time to help these incredibly talented and hardworking kids. You all are the best!
