Shadman Zaman is Massachusetts State Champion; Lincoln-Sudbury Takes Public Forum

posted by Jon Cruz on March 31st, 2007

MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA, Mass. – The Massachusetts Forensic League State Debate Tournament came to a close earlier this evening. The final round featured Shadman Zaman of Sacred Heart High School and Sonia Sujanani of Lexington High School. (Congratulations to both on this achievement!) In the round, Shadman defeated Sonia on a 2-1 decision to earn the state title.

Shadman is coached by Beena Koshy and Chetan Hertzig. Sonia is coached by Lynne Coyne and Matt Scarola.

Congratulations are also in order for the finalists in Public Forum Debate. The final round pitted the team of Kevin Liu and Alex Loomis from Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School against the team of Andreas Rosenberg and Eliana Wollack from Newton North High School. On a 2-1 decision, Lincoln-Sudbury defeated Newtown North to claim the state championship.

Kevin and Alex are coached by Tom Danko. Andreas and Eliana are coached by Julie Lewis.

Chris Palmer, president of the Massachusetts Forensic League, notes that this is the first year Newtown North has competed in debate. Their first-ever tournament was the highly competitive Public Forum division at the Lexington Winter Invitational, at which they reached the octafinals. This final round appearance at the State Tournament is only their third-ever debate tournament. Great job!

Congrats to the finalists, both of whom I have much respect for. That noted, Shadman does not look like me!

Just a correction, Newton North did not reach quarterfinals at Lexington Winter Invitational in Public Forum, they were eliminated in Octafinals by Regis GG

GREAT Job Lincoln-Sudbury LL and Newton North
