Ross Brown and Rachel Umans

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Its name suggests something regional, but its field demonstrates how national it is: the Great Midwestern Novice Championships took place this weekend at Iowa City West High School. The final round featured a competitor from Iowa and a competitor from Maryland; in the round, Valley High School’s Ross Brown defeated Walt Whitman High School’s Rachel Umans to claim the GMNC title. Congratulations to both!

Ross is coached by Dixie Waldo, Ernie Rose, and Derek Smith. Rachel is coached by Anjan Choudhury and Tanya Choudhury.

Congratulations to all of our champions! I’m hoping that everyone had a great time. Thank you to all of our student, college and adult judges who helped to make this a great experience by judging beyond their commitments in a lot of cases.

We have just concluded policy. Congratulations to Iowa City City High School for their runner-up finish…continuing the Allen family tradition :c) A HUGE congratulations to St. Paul Central, who, as the champions for this year, took home the mini-coffee table sized plaque :c).

Thanks to everyone for making this another great tournament and we hope to see lots of you here next year (especially to compete in the Evidence Interpretation, Pen Twirling and Tub Toss)!

Thanks also to Anjan Choudhury for covering the results for VB :c)

[...] This weekend has two major opportunities for the nation’s younger debaters to shine: the Second-Year and Novice Nationals at Woodward Academy and the Great Midwestern Novice Championships at Iowa City West High School. Check our coverage of the GMNC — which featured Lincoln-Douglas, policy, and Public Forum debate — in our “Policy Coverage by Michigan Debate.” — [...]

Yes. I think that has to be one of the dumbest things I have ever said in a debate round. It made it bery funny though…haha.

I just wanted to thank Cyndy and the entire IC-West crew for hosting a fantastic tournament with excellent judging. If you are looking to attend a first-year novice national championship next year, I highly recommend this one, as it was definitely worth the long trip from DC for us.

Also, I just wanted to offer props out to the squads from Valley and Lynbrook. With respect to Lynbrook, those power-matched prelims definitely felt like we were doing the debate equivalent of the East Coast-West Coast hip hop battles of the 1990s, as I think there were upwards of 15 Whitman-Lynbrook showdowns. Needless to say, those programs are stacked for years and big props to their coaches for spending so much time working with their youngest students.

And of course, I am so proud of team Whitman, and happy you all got some recognition this weekend. You are a fantastic group of young debaters, and I know yall will have a wonderful future in this activity.

Finally, the biggest thanks and props to my sister Tanya. She is one of the hardest-working, nicest, and most talented coaches in the activity, and there is no way I could ever have gotten through this weekend or this year without you T! Thank you!

A couple errors with the Policy results:

    1. Danny was second speaker and Laura was third.
    2. Henry Sibley High School is in Minnesota not Iowa.
    3. The SPC team was Laura Johnson/Steve Quam not Hannah Johnson/Steve Quam.
