David McGough is TFA State Champion
CARROLTON, TX – They say everything’s bigger in Texas. TFA State began with 190 competitors battling through five preliminary rounds and ended with just two facing each other in a final round: this year’s TFA State finalists were Greenhill’s David McGough and Hockaday’s Taarini Vohra, the respective first and second seeds. Congratulations to both debaters on this huge honor!
In the final round, David defeated Taarini on a 2-1 decision to be crowned TFA State Champion.
David is coached by Aaron Timmons and Neil Conrad. Taarini is coached by Stacy Thomas and Tom Evnen.

Those are some tough breaks, when you have TOC bid holders like David Donatti and Philly Wiggins get knocked out in prelims. Just like AJ Motgi last year. Proving yet again that TFA is the deepest and most competitive state tournament in the country.
Congratulations to those who broke. And to those who qualified to the tournament, which is an accomplishment in itself.

im not sure guys, ill grant that texas is a tough state to compete in but the main thing that proves is that there are some really bad judges in prelims. becca, daniel, and jbex are probably three of the best debaters ive seen this year and it doesn’t reflect well on a tournament in which none of them clear.

how every time the “big names” don’t break, its automatically the judging that caused it. there is no way that maybe some people who underperformed all year, or who did not attend the TOC’s to get the same recognition, could have possibly beat the “best debaters”

Why should we default to your explanation any more readily than to the judging explanation? If one really good debater doesn’t clear, an anomaly like the one you suggest is a plausible explanation. If four or five of the best debaters in Texas don’t clear, it seems more likely that there’s something systematic about the tournament that makes that happen than that all five of them happened to draw incredibly talented but heretofore unrecognized local debaters in the one-down round and lose.

well, TFA releases a results packet every year after the state tournament, so we will be able to see for ourselves, who they debated, and who the judges were in the rounds.

I guess I will come ou of my vbd posting retirement….
tfa ha good judging. I don’t want to hear otherwise, if you have 1 loss or better you will get decent judging. tfa has been good with mjp. the problem is that it is really easy to lose two rounds and not clear. this is something quinn should know since he lost his break round at state last year with stacy thomas in the back. haha love you bro!
but the point of this post was to say, congratz jojo… do what you do. but if you get a texas plaque you gotta donate it to underprivileged kids.

TFA is a state tournament and the key is adaptation. While you have MJP, you can not get rid of every “undesirable” judge and while you may see that some look good, it is hard to tell how a judge actually evaluates a round on questionaires. We had some good and some that looked good on paper, but not so good in the round as a judge. In the end, it is a tournament and a tough, deep one at that.

dudley says:
“tfa has good judging. I don’t want to hear otherwise, if you have 1 loss or better you will get decent judging.”
that’s definitely not true. from someone who was there this year, there were people judging the break round and 4-0 powermatch that had very little idea what they were doing. mjp can’t be that effective because the judging pool is so large and you are forced to rank tons of judges that are by no means preferred as 1’s. yet with any tournament with 193 competitors and 50+ ld judges, you are bound to draw some judges you really don’t want back there, so TFA probably still does a better job than most tournaments its size. i think TFA should have done a better job of placing judges in outrounds and done a better job ranking outround judges, so that some guy who did duet acting and novice CX in high school isn’t judging a very important octas round, but maybe i’m just bitter because i’m at home instead of watching the final round.
congrats to rahim for a big showing. i’m proud of you.
and congrats to perry beard and cinco for having a very impressive outround showing.
and mcgough consistently impresses me more than almost everyone else on the circuit.

1. There are caps on entries thru state quals for CA state
2. re: TOC people, i beg to differ, check the entries: http://www.joyoftournaments.com/chssa/2006/event16.htm

David McGough — you’re in a long line of debaters coached by AT who’ve taken home this title. You definitely represent their best traits; persuasive, efficient, and highly intelligent. Very impressive.

VAGUE AND ARROGANT AND CONTEMPTUOUS OH MY!
heres a riddle matt: if it was so vague, how do you know it was arrogant and contemptuous?
OBVIOUSLY i meant to piss people off. i am AMBIGUOUSLY ARROGANT. did you READ that post before you clicked submit? you sound like a moron.
listen im pretty used to being called arrogant but im gonna go with a big ‘no link’ here. i dont understand how saying that people get what they deserve in the long-run in any implies that im better than anyone. maybe i dont know what arrogant means, but i think if my statement couldnt possibly imply my own superiority then its probably not arrogant. im not sure whats contemptuous either. it is a fact. eventually, you get what you deserve. sometimes you get more than you deserve, sometimes you get less, but it balances out. its all very zen. if what youre looking for is a blunt call-out, heres one: i think youre a jackass.

Another interpretation of your statement, Mike, is the possibility that you were commenting that some of those who didn’t break deserved what they got. Given the comments above discussing the good debaters who didn’t break, that was a reasonable interpretation. I’m not saying that’s what you meant, but when you’re vague, you risk being interpreting in multiple ways.

Melin,
If we’re talking about amazing quarters rounds, Danielle deserves another shout out for what I’m sure was an amazingly close round with Nathan. She’s going to be beastly next year (even more so than she is already.)

brian…i was not discounting anyone else in that paragraph…just giving a shout out to all of you cinco ranchers and to the round i adjudicated in quarters.
i am extremely proud of danielle (smogard)…as i have let her know.
btw if the brackets had not been broken danielle (good) would have hit nathan for like the 7th time this year and i am sure jenn or i would have been adjudicating

Melin,
It would have to be you or Jenn judging, as we believe that’s part of the conspiracy.
And I will graciously pass on your shout-out to the rest of the team

Stuti said something along the lines of:
“A lot of the TOC peeps are from the same league and they knock each other out. Plus, there’s entry limits”
Exactly.
That’s why the CA State tourney is comparatively lame. A state the size of CA should have more than 64 people competing. Plus, the judging pool aint what it should be.

I want to extend my congrats to David for rolling through the tournaments as the undefeated top seed and speaker…very impressive.
Congrats to Stacy Thomas, Taarini, and the rest of the Hockaday crew…clearing 5 is fabulous, but most people don’t know that Hockaday QUALIFIED 15 kids for TFA. nice work.
Shout outs to Arti and Rahim, two of the nicest people on the circuit whose hard work and faith paid off this past weekend.
And thanks to my kids (Danielle, Brian, Spencer, Jackie, Aaron, Trisha, and Xiao-Hui) and John Lewis for making this the best state tournament in the history of the Cinco Ranch program. I don’t have the words, guys…

From what I hear, Texas state tournaments actually have circuit judges. You can’t get that in CA.

cali state ftw
probably most telling explanation of the california state tournament – the only time i attended (04), oscar shine was the only “big name” judge at the tournament. everyone else was pretty much lay/flay. the tournament recognized this, and put him in the congress pool.
