Lexington Takes the Westchester Classic; Bronx Science Wins Northeast Championships

posted by Ryan Hamilton on March 3rd, 2007

Vineet Singal, Seth Teleky, Matt Dunay, and Saboor Sheerazi

SHRUB OAK, NY - The Westchester Classic — which has a bid to the Tournament of Champions in policy debate at the semifinal level — held its final round of policy debate this morning. Congratulations to the finalists! The round featured Naomi Logan and Tom Burnett from Lexington High School and Robyn Gougelet and Joel Butterly from Hanover High School. Lexington defeated Hanover to claim this year’s Lakeland title.

The Westchester Classic was one part of this year’s expanded Lakeland District Debate Tournament. For the first time, Lakeland High School hosted the Northeast Championships. The Bronx High School of Science closed out both the Lincoln-Douglas debate division and the novice policy debate division. Congratulations to LD co-champions Matt Dunay, Seth Teleky, Saboor Sheerazi, and Vineet Singal! Congratulations as well to the four policy debate co-champions: the team of Diana Tive and Madison Gardiner, the team of Dylan Gorman and David Seidman, the team of Andrew Markoff and Zack Elias, and the team of Regan Bozman and Dee Yusuf.

Matt, Seth, Saboor, and Vineet are coached by Jon Cruz and Douglas Jeffers. Diana, Madison, Dylan, David, Andrew, Zack, Regan, and Dee are coached by Sarah M. Heaton, David Marks, and Todd Fine.

Varun Jayaraman and Adam Silver

In the final round of the Novice Northeast Championship, Bronx Science’s Adam Silver faced off against Ridge High School’s Varun Jayaraman. A panel of critics consisting of Newburgh Free Academy coaches and varsity policy debaters adjudicated, and on a 3-2 decision, Adam defeated Varun to take the novice title.

Adam is coached by Jon Cruz. Varun is coached by David Yastremski and Dario Camara.

Thank you so much to Stefan Bauschard for doing a great job running the annual Westchester Classic, and to Michael Bacon and Sheryl Kaczmarek for creating and directing this new Northeast championship for novices and second-year debaters. We were excited to be a part of this new tournament and I know I speak for the entire team when I thank you for the obvious effort that went into organizing it.

Congratulations to Matt, Seth, Saboor, Vineet, Adam, Madison, Diana, Dylan, David, Andrew, Zack, Regan, and Dee on their triumphs this weekend, and to all of the other Bronx Science debaters who placed as well!

I am very proud of you. When I first came to the school three years ago, I knew rebuilding the program would be a process, and I am very excited about and proud of how far ALL of you have progressed since then. It is an honor and a joy to work with all of you. I’m looking forward to seeing you accumulate continued successes this year and down the road.

    Good job.
