Cary Academy Closes Out TFL State LD Tournament; East Chapel Hill Claims Public Forum Title

SOUTHERN PINES, NC – The thirty-first annual Tarheel Forensic League Championship Tournament, hosted by Pinecrest High School, concluded just a few hours ago. The tournament award four state titles in the debate events; varsity and junior varsity championships were held in both Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum debate. Congratulations are in order first for Cary Academy’s Robert Thorstad and Kevin Cotter, who closed out the varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate tournament in the final round. They were named state co-champions.

Robert and Kevin are coached by Carole Hamilton and RJ Pellicciotta.

Congratulations are also in order for Durham Academy’s Josh Erb and Asheville High School’s Riley Hurst, the finalists in junior varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate. On a 2-1 decision, Josh defeated Riley to win the junior title.

Josh is coached by Todd Cobb and Jeff Welty. Riley is coached by Keith Pittman and Larry Burke.

The Public Forum fields were comparable in size to the Lincoln-Douglas fields. In the varsity division, a final round was held between the team of Caleb Frye and Elysia Tegui-in from Pinecrest High School and the team of Kathryn Buse and Brooke Hartley from Durham Academy. In winning the final round, the host school claimed the varsity title. Caleb and Elysia are coached by Libby Carter; Kathryn/Brooke are coached by Todd Cobb and Jeff Welty.

Finally, congratulations to East Chapel Hill High School’s team of Dania Toth and Aaron Rogoff and Myers Park High School’s team of Geoffrey Yost and David Marshall for advancing to the final round of the junior varsity Public Forum tournament. On a 2-1 decision, East Chapel Hill defeated Myers Park to win the tournament. Dania and Aaron are caoched by Jonathon Peele and Davis Bennett; Geoffrey and David are coached by Jason Kline and Andrew West.
